Gaming rebuild

OPJM

Junior Member
Ok, so it's been awhile since I have been in the market and need some help.

My old rig is basically done and I want to rebuild it. I have the HD's I need (and the monitor, case) but need basically everything else.

I use it for gaming, not like crazy gaming, but enough. Any help on the processor, motherboard, gfx card and such is much appreciated. Thanks.

jake, ive helped out alot of people but i can't stand ones who don't do any work at all and expect someone to do it for them. ive posted in almost every current "help my build thread" where the person actually did some work

maybe you can stand them, but i cant.

The link is fixed and your response is still that of a jerk and not constructive. Just because you are tired of seeing "new build help" posts doesn't mean it's ok to be rude.

Agree. First how is this person suppose to know exactly what to put in the forum when at the top of this forum there is no, "What information you need to give so we can help you build a system." So how can you expect people to know exactly what is needed when there is no post like that.

This is the first forum people will go to and this is where all the builds get posted.

Now on to the subject of this post:

Whats your price range? How much do you actually want to spend (Are you flexible?)?

What kind of games do you play? Or hope to play?

Do you prefer LCD or CRT?

What else will you be using this computer for? Is it for college? Just for a home gaming computer?

Will you overclock? (even if you don't know how to, it can be a lot of fun and you can get a lot out of it without damaging your system)

This is a start for ya then we can help ya out.

im not tired of them, ive posted one and I think almost everyone here has. Im just saying that i think he should do some work.

you know, if you search the threads, there are plenty of answers to this guys question. Also, the guides at Anandtech are great just for this kind of thing. Don't you think he should have did a little thinking first?

Cheezeit, don't be a jerk. Yes it would have been better if he did some research himself and then asked, but you don't have to act like that.

OPJM we do need more info though if you want us to help you. Answer the questions Stokes posted.

I have read your constructive feedback in various other posts and am just wondering why you didn't just point him in the direction of the guides...

Right around $1000

What kind of games do you play? Or hope to play?

Generally newer rpg type games, some online, some not

Do you prefer LCD or CRT?

Either

What else will you be using this computer for? Is it for college? Just for a home gaming computer?

Home gaming and work

Will you overclock? (even if you don't know how to, it can be a lot of fun and you can get a lot out of it without damaging your system)

would love to, but i don't know how

This is a start for ya then we can help ya out.

Thanks for the responses, I apologize for the lack of info. in the initial post (was in a hurry to leave for lunch and forgot everything that needs to be included). I hope I answered everything (see bold responses above)

I am and will continue to do my own research, but part of that, imo, is getting other's opinions. I'm not, per se, asking anyone to build my system, I am simply asking for advice/people's opinions on what they think is good/not good within a set parameter. Thanks again to everyone that has posted thus far.

Whoa, how the heck did you get an eVGA 6600GT for $130?!

I don't know how good a DFI Ultra-D would be for someone who hasn't overclocked. Could he learn? Yes, but that board requires a lot of attention to detail to get a good stable overclock, something I would not recommend for a newbie overclocker. I'm not really sure what would be the best board for this situation.

As far as video, 6600GT is an ok, not the best, but if you are on a tight budget then it will work, but in about a year and a half you might start seeing that card falling behind. I could be wrong on this one, but thats what I think.

Taking Stokes' advice on the mobo, i am looking to get this setup:

BFG NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra Motherboard;

AMD 3000 + Venice;

G.Skill or Corsair VS 1 Gig;

6600 GT; and

Antec 480

I may try overclocking but if the DFI is hard to do, I don't want to ruin it. Thoughts on the above and the difficulty of a noob overclocking these pieces? Thanks.

hmm give the Chaintech VNF4 ultra a look. at 90 bux its a stable motherboard even recommended by anandtech for the midrange. u pair this up with the $80 1GB corsair vs and u got yourself a nice budget system! saving money there will allow u to maybe upgrade to a 3200+ venice giving u a 10x multiplier for an ez small overclock!
