my cousin asked me about this game. i haven't kept up with games nor have i kept up with video cards. so, any help would be appreciated.

the game is called Guild Wars

sys requirements:

Windows(r) XP/2000/ME/98
Intel Pentium(r) III 1GHz or equivalent
512 MB RAM
CD-ROM Drive
500 MB Available HDD Space
ATI Radeon 9000 or GeForce 4 Ti Series Video Card with 64MB of VRAM
16-bit Sound Card
Internet connection
Keyboard and mouse

his system:

I have Windows XP, a Pentium IIII, exactly 512 MB RAM, a CD drive,
about 3 GB of available space, and I think I have a good enough sound
card. But, I'm not sure if I have a good enough video card. I have a
NVIDIA Vanta/Vanta LT. I don't want to buy Guild Wars and then a new
video card because mine isn't good enough. Do you know if Vanta/Vanta
LT is as good or better than the recommended video cards.

edit: looks like the Vanta is an integrated video card with 16MB RAM. yikes. can anyone recommend an inexpensive video card?

It will run the game...

cool, thanks. i was actually looking for a new video card as well, since my Radeon 8500 went kaput. i'm not concerned with gaming, just as long as it has a DVI port for my LCD. i like that the video card doesn't have a fan, to keep the noise down...

for my little cousin, will the video card last him a while with the current crop of games?

Not likely, a radeon 9200 (and the LE version is a weakened 9200) is designed to handle office apps like MS word etc.

Your best bet might be a used VC from the FSFT forum.
Or you can get a FX5200 for <$50 shipped. Not a very good card, but will at least play that game.

It will run Guild Wars, Halo, half life, star wars games, need for speed underground2, those kind of games, but if you want something that will last you longer buy a more expensive card. Why not give your cousin your system, and build you a new one. Great excuse... :p

The cards listed will not play halo very well, it is a farily stressful game, getting only about 80 FPS on a new mid-high machine

the recommended card.....I dont think that integrated card has a chance...I cant even get my moms XP 2100+ with integrated NF2 graphics to play NFS underground 2 without the occasional jerkiness with lowest settings.....Yours would be far worse then that...

I have a 9200se and play all those games at 1024x768 at medium settings without a problem. I don't want to set it any higher...but they run fine.

I'd suggest spending a bit more and getting a Vanilla Raedon 9600, it should work alot better than most of the other Rec's and only costs in the 70-80ish range w/ a 128bit memory bus, it's also prolly the Min card you could use w/ longhorn. he're a link SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9600 Video Card, 128MB DDR, 128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "ATLANTIS RADEON 9600" -RETAIL

Edit: at the lowend if you plan to game at all in any newer or modern games (like guildwars) this should be the lowest end card you look at for decent frame rates at 1024x768 or lower. Also as guildwars is a MMORPG you should look into getting 1GB of memory if his system will support it, that would help that specific game quite a bit.
