Gaming problem with cable network

My brother and I play an online franchise on Madden 2002. He connects to me via dialup modem, but recently successfully networked his computer to my dad's cable connection. He can get online fine, but can't connect to my IP to play the game. Any idea what the problem is? He has a NetGear network hub. We're thinking maybe connecting the computers directly via NIC cards with no hub? Or connect the cable to HIS computer, and network in the other? Any advice?

We're in different states. No, I don't have a network on my system. He reinstalled his dial up modem, and connected to me just fine. So it's not on my end. But the dial up connection sucks, so we really want to figure the cable connection out.
