i have 4 desktops that i consider game-worthy that i have arrayed in a LAN for gaming fun
in order from worst to best
PII-400 (dont laugh, it can still handle the latest 3D games with aplomb - on the lowest res/detail
). 256MB PC100, SBLive 5.1, WD 20GB HDD
Duron 1Ghz, 256MB PC100, on-board sound, WD 40GB HDD
Athlon 1.4Ghz, 512MB DDR, SBLive 5.1, WD 100GB HDD
Athlon 1.4Ghz, 512MB DDR, SBAudigy, WD 40GB HDD
since I want the gaming experience on each computer to be as close as possible, i figured I'd reverse my available video cards so that the worst system had the best card
i have on hand, from my impression- best to worst
Geforce2 GTS-V
Kyro II
Geforce2 MX 400
Geforce2 MX 400
i figured the PII is too limited by its CPU, so there wouldnt be much difference between the best and worst video card, so i put a Geforce2 MX 400 on it
since the Duron is the slowest of the other 3 computers, I gave it the GTS-V, and I put the Kyro II and the remaining MX 400 on the two Athlons
so my question is, will the GTS help make up for the slower Duron processorior am I wasting the power of the GTS on the slower computer?
the Athlons seem to be fast enough for todays games that they dont mind using a slow-ass video card even at high resolutions. on the other hand, the Duron seems to struggle a bit more, even with its GTS, although that may be a compounded effect from also having less and slower memory and using on-board sound
i guess I'm also asking, how would you setup your game room with the above hardware?
