Gaming performance question...

For convenience, I am using Farstone Gamedrive. It creates a virtual CD rom (best I can describe) so I can play my games without having the CD in the tray. It's nice, because with having kids I can keep my game discs far away and safe. Can anyone tell me if I am losing a lot of performance by having an extra program running, or would I actaually get a performance gain by having the hard drive accessed instead of a CD rom if it needs any info?

Levels / maps load faster. Frames per second could be very slightly reduced from running CD emulation, probably not enough to notice.
