I've been out of the loop for a while. just wondering how these 2 processors would compare speed wise? the athlon is twice the cost, so I'm hoping that it has a lot better performance, but I really have no idea. is the athlon worth the extra $80 or so?

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3200BPBOX - Retail

Intel Celeron D 331 Prescott 533MHz FSB LGA 775 64-Bit Processor w/ Execute Disable Bit Model BX80547RE2667CN - Retail Operating Frequency: 2.66GHz

That is not a fair comparison, not in the same price range, try comparing that celeron with a semprom 3000+, anyway even the semprom will trounce that celeron D.

Exactly. Thats like saying "will a Corvette(circa anyyear!) beat a VW beetle (circa 1960)

ok, I didn't know how much clock speed has to do with anything anymore. thanks.

Clock speed is not the only measurement of performance. The Celeron is a very bad design and thus will only perform good at insane frequency's. Get it???

A pinto with a V8 is not going to match a Porsche 911 with a V6.

No. Depending on whether or not you do anything else besides gaming. The Celeron is a mighty performer, however, I would consider a chip with hyperthreading.

i think the last two opinions may be a little biased based on those sigs, heh

Please I don't see how a Celeron is a mighty performer compared to even an AMD Sempron trying to compare it to an Athlon 64 is ridiculous... The Celerons are a little cheaper than the Sempron now days but not much... The Celerons consume more power and generate more heat than does a Sempron? and the Sempron has a faster front side bus... and a Sempron will utterly crush a Celeron in gaming? and will out perform it at any other task any ways the Celeron is only useful to dell? LOL

ROFL!!! What kind of question is that?!

The AMD would mop the floor with the Celeron!!

Never, underestimate the power of a Celeron D? :beer:

Uh, no. For reference, the 2GHz Athlon 64 is a 3200+. The Celeron D 2.6 is about equivalent to (or slightly slower than) an Athlon XP 2400+. Furthermore, an Athlon 64 2800+ slightly outperforms the top Athlon XP, 3200+. Let's sum up:

Celeron D 2.6 < Athlon XP 2400+ < Athlon XP 3200+ < Athlon 64 2800+ < Athlon 64 3200+.

Celeron == "Mighty Performer"??

I think you mean that it is a mighty performer in racking up your power bill and keep your bedroom nice and cozy in the winter.

hyper threading will be useless in games ....right?

anyway it depends on your budget but intell sucks these days for games so get amd. sempron or A64
