Gaming over VPN

Has anyone here ever played games over a VPN before? Im trying to play Age of Mythology with a friend over my VPN but we cant get it working. He is able to connect to my VPN just fine, he has my IP and we can ping each other. But, when we go into the game we cant see either of our lan games and we can not connect directly when we input an IP. Anyone know how to do this?

Does it matter who hosts it?

I have done this in the past for certain games, but we had no issues. It wasn't with AoM though.

Each of us tried hosting but neither worked.

Is the VPN connection protected by a firewall? Do you both have the same patch levels?

There is a firewall but it should be allowing the VPN to pass through. Ill try disabling it and see if that does anything, maybe I dont have it setup properly to let it pass through.

I was able to get it working over VPN. I used the instructions in that link for hamachi but without using hamachi. I entered in the local VPN IP numbers into the shortcut path and also added that directip command to the path and it seems to be working.
