Gaming on Windows 2000 VS Windows XP

I remember a few years ago most reviews of any would also perform much faster on windows 2000, i was wondering if it's still like this...

Is windows 2000 still a much more viable os for gaming performance and general use, aside the pretty GUI that comes with xp..

Will be using an ASROCK Dual Sata s939, 3700 A64, and 2GB of ram.

What do you guys think?

I always used to find 2K the faster of the two in the past, but nowadays I've found there's really not much difference between them.

Some dumb gaming companies only allow their games to be installed on XP for some stupid reason, but thankfully there's not too many of them.

If you own both OS's and can live with activation, the XP would probably be the best bet for you from a support point of view, but if you only have 2K then stick with it and save the cash for Vista.

I've been threatening to go back to win 2k. It does run faster and use less resorces on my older PC. If you do decide to give it a try and want to play some old games this may come in handy.
Compatibility Mode

This is a function built into Windows® XP, and added to
Windows® 2000 as of service pack 2.

(To enable it on Windows® 2000, execute the command
''regsvr32 %systemroot%\apppatch\slayerui.dll'' from the Run prompt
or a command console(without the quotes).
You will need Administrator priveledges to enable this.
Service Pack 2 or higher must be installed.
This will add a tab to execution shortcuts called 'Compatibility'.
You may want to check first to see if compatibility mode is already available.
Do not do this in Windows® XP -- you already have it active by default.)

If you install 2k to the default directory the command would be.
regsvr32 c:\winnt\apppatch\slayerui.dll

Wow, you really do learn something new everyday. Thank you! 🙂 Now, to give Interstate '76 ANOTHER go at installing! hehehe

I'm sticking with win2k pro here at home, I have XP at work, and, I just don't like it. It's been n00bified to a certain extent, and yes, I'm sure it can be stripped down, but I just find 2k more, I dunno, utiliterean? It gets the job done, simple, quick, and easy. Shuts down in 5 seconds too. Yes, 5 seconds from clicking OK to shutdown.

I have both OS's on 2 different machines and find myself continually going back to 2000 Pro. It has never crashed on me (wish I could say the same for XP), and it still plays all the newest games just fine. I like the eye candy and the few extras in XP but 2000 is as stable as a rock and seems a little bit faster at launching app's and accessing pages on the net. Both OS's have the same CPU, Video card and memory so I think I can be fairly precise when I say 2000 is, in my opinion, still a better OS than XP.

If XP is still crashing on you, then diagnose what it is.
90% of the time it is a ****** driver that causes the crash now, not the OS.
Also you have to have a up to date copy of XP... not XP no SP1 or or SP2.

Accessibility of pages should have nothing to do with your os. It should depend on the time it takes your connection to load it to your computer. I ran a test with firefox and faster fox installed, and I experienced no differences between loading on XP and 2000, aside from the normal small deviance.

I heard windows 2000 has much better memory management. Not sure if that's true or not since XP basically a hacked version of win2k LOL.

If anything its the other way around.

Win2K and XP have the same memory management. If there's any advantage to gaming on XP, it's because Microsoft is forcibly limiting some software upgrades to XP only to force migration over from Win2K.

Win2K is several tests I've seen again and again is more efficient in terms of IP transmission than XP. Those who want to argue with me about this had better be ready to pull out their versions of XP Server to be tested agasint my version of Windows 2000 server.

There is no server version of Windows XP. The server successor to Windows 2000 Server is Windows Server 2003. The desktop successor to Windows 2000 Professional is Windows XP Home, Professional, and MCE.
