Gaming on an LCD

Right now I've got 2 19" CRTs on my desk that I'd really like to replace with LCDs. I'm accustomed to gaming at 16x12 but can't justify the cost of a super-nice LCD right now, so I'm looking at something like THIS which has a resolution of 1280 x 1024. I was just curious if the gamers around here weigh in on whether I would be dissapointed playing at the lower resolution. Thanks.

Depends on the games you play, but for me 1280x1024 has been enough for me for a long time. I have both a CRT and LCD, and my CRT can do 1600x1200 just fine but I've never found the need to, especially since I now have an Geforce 8800 with advanced AA. Just play at a lower res on your CRT and if you can't stand it, you have your answer. After all it's a psychological thing really.

lol $100 bucks for a 19" LCD is to good to pass up. I was going to point you to some 20.5" ones that run 16x12 but I cant even find one that touches that deal.

1280x1024 is actually pretty good for the games I played. I prefer 1600x1200 but I didnt really miss it going to a (then) LCD. If I were to buy one today, I wouldnt get a smaller one (I paid through the nose for my 24" Dell back when they were kinda new), but Im not really on a budget like I was when I switched to LCD.

You will notice the brightness difference right away (or else I just remember it that way because my CRT sucked?). The other downside is a lot more desk to have to wipe down every week ;)

Don't know about the company, but if it is good that web site should go in the hot deals forum. Gaming should be fine as it has a low refreash rate (what is important as far as I remember)

19" isn't enough to really exploit the potential 1600x1200 so 1024x1280 will be just fine.

OP,

Color Support 16.2 million colors (16bit max?)

If so, that might be kind of limiting.

Completely different. That is the number of colors the display can represent. What you are thinking of is the palette and color depth of colors used in Software and in the Windows Environment.

IIRC 16.2 Million is an 8-bit Display, but more than likely it is misleading you in some way as most LCD's are 6-bit.

I don't regret ditching my CRT and getting an LCD

Plus the widescreen is a nice feature that I really like and highly recommend.

If your going to buy an lcd make sure you buy a quality lcd but just don't be mad if you spend lets say 99 dollars on an lcd don't like the results I don't know anything about the LCD but I've never even heard of the company.

I'd also getting a 17'' over a 19'' as they have the same resolution I remember reading a 17'' will have a higher quality picture than a 19'' with the same res.

That one he's looking at isn't a widescreen though...

Hanns-G isn't too bad. We sell them at TigerDirect and we don't see many returns. Picture isn't bad either on the displays I've seen, although don't expect professional quality.

I'm a pretty hardcore gamer. I play FPS competitively and I also play some WoW on the side.

I'm using a Samsung SyncMaster 730B. It's got 8ms refresh rate and I don't see any ghosting at all in my games. That monitor for 100$ is insane. If you're looking to upgrade, I'd suggest buying a couple of them! (Maybe you could buy three of em and mail me one. :p)
