gaming on a school network

Please not, i posted this in general discussion and was told that here is the correct place, so dorry about the double thread.

i live just off campus at university in an apartment building that the university owns and runs. The apartment came with free internet(which uses the school's lan) When i try to play cs: source or HL2 i get pings of like 2000 to all servers. Is there anything that can be done?
The connection is really fast, i can generally download at like ~100-500k/sec
thanks for any ideas/guidance

The first thing you can do is open a command prompt

->run->cmd

then type tracert ip/hostname

ex, tracert www.microsoft.com

It will then give you a list of all the hops and the time it takes, that will help determine where the problem starts.

on the 'hop' right after my own ip, ie #2, it times out for all remaining ones.

if its on the school network they probably have some kind of packet shaping going on leading to such low respose times. Not much you can do about that really.

you could always call the support desk?
