Many useful opinions guys, thanks for sharing. I'm sorry I deserted my own thread but was abroad for work. ^_^

I played with the idea of building a dedicated gaming PC, it's just that I can't bring myself to "forgive me" for paying for a maching that I'll use more or less only for gaming. I do like OSX for general computing, Aperture for photos etc... So it's being hard. I have all current generation consoles and a Macbook Pro (late 2008)...

I was wondering: how is it the image quality when gaming on a non-native resolution?
That's worrying me.

Same as it woudl be on any other LCD at non-native resolution, kind of crummy. If you run it at 1280*720 you can minimize the crumminess though as that would be exactly half the res.

Why dont you build a cheap gaming PC and pick up a cheaper 13" MBP for the equivalent for a high end iMac?

Yeah, actually I've a late 2008 MBP and I'm thinking about having that and a gaming PC plugged in to the same external monitor. Still I'm not happy of buying a computer for using it only for gaming...

owner of a 2011 imac here - 27", 3.4ghz core i7, 256GB SSD + 1TB, 16GB, 6970m 2GB.

im playing starcraft 2 (in osx) on medium/high settings with textures set to ultra at 2560x1440 no problem. if there are a TON of units (i mean in the hundreds), then the game slows down, but if its a just a few players in a game, it runs at least 50-60fps most of the time. apparently 10.6.8 improves the graphics drivers so ill test sc2 again sometime tomorrow or wednesday.

left 4 dead 2 gets 60fps at 2560x1440, high settings, as well as half life 2, cs:s. and portal 1. the older steam games have no problem running on high settings at 1680x1050 on my mbp (specs in sig), so i would imagine that the rest of the games are fine at 2560x1440 on the 6970m. i dont have portal 2 to test out unfortunately.

any other game you guys want me to try? :) im happy to test anything out!
