3 4870's should chew through 1920x1080 if the scaling is there.

I also have Z5500's for computer speakers. I think they'd make a nice home theater setup for the non-audiophile. They sound good (not great, but certainly not bad), have lots of power and plenty of bass (even though it can be a bit on the muddy side at times), and actually have much better mids/highs then you'd expect from a single 3" speaker.

Anyway, I hope they work out for you, your rig should have no problem with that resolution. I use a single 4870 for an even higher resolution of 1920x1200 and it generally works very well.

Considering my 4890 eats 1080p for breakfast you wont have a problem with trifire 4870, unless you are trying to play crysis with ultra detail and 8xAA or higher.

1080p is only 20% higher res than 1680x1050, which is probably the most common 'high end' resolution. So yes, any card over $100 will handle it fine, and probably some under $100 too.

One thing to think about, for an HTPC that's a lot of power draw and heat. Though a 5850 might be not as fast overall compared to your tri-fire setup, you'll save a lot in power and heat. A 5850 level card has plenty of power for 1080P. You might not want to hear those 4870 fans spinning when you're trying to watch a movie on that rig. You could probably sell those 4870's for very close to what a 5850 costs. If the power draw, heat, and potential noise don't bother you, then that system will be fine. But it's something to think about if you already haven't.

*edit - Also, I know a lot of the HTPC crowd was excited about the HTPC features of the 58x0 cards: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3643&p=10

Since when is 1680x1050 high end? :)
