Well it seems like the 29's are all 1080p and I would suggest that you go look at one in person before you commit to anything. I looked at one in best buy and was not impressed with the 1080p. When I went wide I got a 34" curved screen at 3440x1440 which makes good use of the extra real-estate. Screens can be subjective and one man's junk is another man's treasure so seeing it in person is the only way to know for sure that it's right for you. When I saw the 21:9 curve in person I fell in love with it but had mixed feelings up until that point. In short, do yourself a favor and go look at them in person before you buy. Keep in mind that BB will price match major retailers if you can show them the lower price so they can match it. Online MicroCenter has sales on big screens so watch their sales.

Yep, go look at one before you buy. They are tiny. 29" may sound big but its not on an ultrawide. Its just a stretched 24" 1080p. A 27" regular 1440p has more screen real estate due to the 40% extra vertical height. 34" @ 1440p for ultrawides imo, no less.

I have 29'' ultrawide LG29UM67P and I like it.
The ultrawide aspect ratio makes it look a lot larger than it actually is because of the length - it takes half of my desk! If you can live with 1080p height monitor, it is great. If you set it in the optimal distance where the top and bottom of the display are outside of focus in peripheral vision, it gets super immersive.
I feel that 21:9 displays are wasting vast share of pixels to render unimportant things like floors and sky.

IMHO, the real deal for gaming is VR :)

I still like my Dell 29" ultrawide.

I do not think I would call it tiny.

Coming from a 1680x1050 monitor, my 2560x1080 is excellent especially for gaming. I'll never go back.

If you were to start at 2560x1440 or 1600, then it would be a downgrade. I nice one but you'd miss the extra space. You'd want a 34" but then you'd need the GPU power to make it worthwhile.

What brands should someone look at for ultra wide at 29"?

I currently have a 24" 1080 ips monitor and I wouldn't want a downgrade in visual quality.

I eventually went with the Dell Ultrasharp. Seemed like the best choice at the time, factory calibrated, if there was something wrong with it they would bring one to replace it at the same time they collected it.

The Asus model did look better for gaming overall, faster response, but I was concerned there was a chance that even if 1 pixel didn't work as intended, It would drive me crazy. Asus do have a return policy for bright pixels on some models, including their 29" 21:9, but the Dell customer service trumped them.

LG's customer service is similar to Dell's, they will pick up your monitor and once they have it back at theirs, deliver one out personally. They have done this for me a few times even when a monitor was out of its "official" warranty period, but I wasn't sure this would apply to dead/fixed pixels and I wanted to try a Dell this time around. There was also the issue that their main model needed a firmware update (1.25) to really shine, and although they would upgrade it for free if you did get one that wasn't up to date, the hassle of getting the engineer round to do so detracted slightly from my overall decision.

I expect by now, all of their monitors that shops have in stock will already be at 1.25 or higher.

I was very impressed with the Dell. No problems personally with the difference in response time/input lag compared to the others. Factory calibration really does make certain scenes shine as intended, no need for extra equipment. Initial backlight bleed in one corner has disappeared completely.

TFCentral do some very in depth reviews, and at one point had a good roundup of the available models from a variety of manufacturers, although I can't seem to find it now.

They also have a helpful selection questionnaire.

That's the one I went with a couple years ago and picked it up at a good price on a Black Friday deal relatively cheap.

These days, you could probably pick up on with more vertical footprint of course. I hadn't looked at buying a monitor personally in awhile, or what a Dell like that runs now.

But I still have a 280X pushing it at 2560 X 1080, your GPU will be a factor in what you use also of course.

I have a Samsung S29E790C VA 29" 2560x1080, and I don't like it. I got it as a gift, and compared to my IPS 1440p display, I notice the low pixel count (individual pixels are easily distinguishable from about a foot) and really sluggish response time, (ghosting!) as well as the poor quality of the image in general. I feel like the IPS panel has better contrast, definitely has better whites, and the color reproduction is far superior.

The worst part is how poorly games support ultrawide. Most games I play, relatively new ones even (Just Cause 3, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Skyrim) all have UI issues. I'd rather play those in 16:9. Furthermore, even in games that do have good ultrawide support like Crysis 3, I personally don't notice a difference over 16:9. My experience with this is similar to my short-lived foray in surround gaming: not worth it.

If I were buying a monitor, I'd go for a 1080p/1440p 144Hz a-sync, preferably IPS. I know that I'm never going to buy another VA panel.

The Dell 29" is IPS.

But is just one from years ago.

There are apps like Flawless widescreen and tweaks that you can find online that solve UI issues and enhance compatibility with 21:9, but in the end it is down to personal taste.

I really like it, and in some games (DA:I in particular) it can really feel like branches from trees whose trunks disappear off the extended edges of the screen in your peripheral veiw as you move forward, really are about to hit you. I get the impulse to duck when walking through archways.

It's not always perfect, but even in worst case scenario, you can still play in 16:9 like everyone else. And movies shot in that panoramic aspect ratio fill the screen and are more awesome because if it.

I wasn't challenging you or anything, my post was just a general thoughts dump about my newish monitor.

Widescreen hacks are hit or miss in my experience. My main experience has been using them for KotOR, and the old school uniws has worked better than flawless widescreen. I don't remember exactly what, but I had lots of issues with Flawless widescreen.

No problem man, I know mine is a bit old.

Sorry if it came out wrong.

I've never tried a widescreen hack myself, but the games I have tried with it never required one really.

Yeah, newer games are more likely to work.

One older game that does work, that I never even thought would get a widescreen patch, is the GOG Sacrifice!! Good ol' Good old Games!!

I've had my 34" Acer UW for a couple of months now and compatibility has been alright. Flawless Widescreen definitely helps but there are still issues with some of the games I play. I can't decide if I like it over Eyefinity.
