Gaming on 720p

So I'm in limbo on getting a 1080p or 720p tv.

How is the 360 or PS3 on the 1080p versus the 720p screen?

What screen size? That's an important detail.

QFT. If it is less than 40" and it has a good contrast ratio it really wont make a difference. Anything larger I would probably go with the 1080p.

if you plan on using it as a monitor for a computer at any point in time, definitely get 1080p regardless. otherwise, what they said.

I game on a Panasonic plasma 50" 720p and Xbox 360 games look incredible! No reason at all to go 1080p unless you get a REALLY good deal on one.

As far as gaming is concerned, there's really no need to go 1080p. Most games don't even support that resolution. However, if you plan on watching Blu-ray movies on your TV, then going 1080p makes sense, but only if the screen is 40'' or higher as the others said.

Right, almost all games are rendered at 640p or 720p then upscaled, there isn't any extra detail that you'll miss out on.

Alright, so I tried playing Metal Gear Solid 4 on the PS3.

This is like my first time playing a console game after a really long time. I've been a PC gamer for a long time and when I was playing the game, I noticed smearing... you know the effect when you play a non native res on a pc monitor?

Is this how console games play or is there some tweaking that's needed?

What are your checked settings in display? Remember that if you check only 1080p and the game doesn't support it, it will drop down to 480p unless you have 720p or 1080i checked.

We've got a 42" and 720p looks great. But as they said, anything bigger and I'd jump to 1080p. I think at this point for smaller TV's better contrast ratio/refresh rate will do more for you than higher resolution.

I think if you're going to watch Blu-ray movies, you should get a 1080p set regardless. Downscaling to a non-native resolution is always less than optimal. Besides, the price difference between a 720p and 1080p set is a couple hundred dollars at most, and you'll have that TV for how long? Get the good stuff.

You should always watch things in their native resolutions (even on the 360 despite scaling being built in). For games, that's 720p, and for BD, that's 1080p. You might as well future-proof yourself and get all your bases covered with a 1080p TV.

Me too, I agree with your comments.

The list of games that support 1080p has grown quite a bit since I last checked 🙂

Oblivion supports 1080p on PS3? Since when?

I was surprised to see that too. My daughter has been playing it on my 46-inch 1080P Sammy and it looks like 720P resolution, maybe upscaled but not full 1080P. Perhaps the game needs to be switched resolution in the display settings?

I'm playing it on a 50" Samsung 1080p and it definitely looks 720p, no mistake about it. There aren't any in game options to change the resolution. If anyone knows how to make Oblivion run in 1080p on PS3 I would be very interested 🙂

No, that wiki list is of games (1%) that render to 1080p plus games that upscale a lower resolution (99%).

GTA IV for example renders to 640p then scales to 1080p.

So if you don't care about the awesome goodness of 1080p blu-ray then a 720p display is fine for both xbox and PS3 gaming, almost none of which is really 1080p.

Yes exactly. There are no real 1080p games. Only reason to get 1080p is for Blu-ray.

Get one of those inexpensive 300$ish LCD 24" monitors with HDMI, check for ones with LOW input lag, NOT the 2-8ms bullshit. REAL REVIEWS on input lag.
