Hi guys

I'm torn between two monitors for gaming on PC and PS4

Asus VX238h
or
Asus VX239h

The big difference is the first is TN, the second is IPS. What makes me uncertain is that the IPS display has 5ms response time vs 1ms on the other one

What do you suggest? Is 5ms enough to avoid ghosting on most games?

IPS panels all the way.
TN is for grandmothers checking their AOL email accounts and updating their MySpace pages.

I'd stick with 3ms and below. I had a 6ms monitor before and could notice the "slight" delay. You also have to take into consideration that the speeds aren't all equal. An 8ms speed could be just as good as a 3ms depending on how biased the test were they used. So try out the 5ms and if you don't like it, exchange it :)

I just purchased the Dell P2414H, which is an IPS panel rated at 8ms, and I have found it more than adequate for gaming. I've not noticed any ghosting and will never go back to gaming on a TN again. The colors are far more vibrant, viewing angles more generous and the blacks are a deep, dark and rich.
