There are a few laptops with midrange cards available in that price range, though I think you're better off just building a desktop and getting a cheaper, more portable machine if you ever plan to use the laptop on the go.

Check Slickdeals or xpbargains for deals from HP. i7 and 5830 have been seen at $1049. With 5% cashback, you are right at $1k. Something with slightly more modest specs should end up well under that.

Yes, a GTX 260M class laptop can be had with an Core i5 or core i7 for around $1k

Amazon is selling a previous generation Asus G51VX (4gb of RAM, Nvidia GTX 260m GDRR5, Core 2 Duo) for $600 refurbished. I think it still has a 2 year warranty on it though. It should be able to easily handle any games out there.

Core i7 should be a min. Core 2 Duo will no longer suffice. I had a G60Vx (better than the G51Vx) for awhile and it struggled.
