Gaming laptop that will run Oblivion

limer

Hi all

I have a family member that's looking for a laptop that will run Oblivion on medium settings for around $2000. I've done a bit of research and Dell's XPS M1210 with some extras looks like it "might" do it according to people in various forums I've googled to.

What does everyone think? Any real life experiences people could share with me?

Thanks,

limer

I would have to recommend you the Asus W3J. It's a 14.1" widescreen notebook with a dedicated X1600 graphics card.

good luck, from what i have read oblivion takes slied 7900gtxs to their knees even at 1280x1024... 🙁

medium settings and what RESOLUTION?
really oblibion can be enjoyed at really low resolution (640x480) and most every setting max and 4xAA 16xAF on my x800gt (just a tiny bit faster than a 6600gt). unfortunately lcd don't scale very well so while 640x480 look great on my 15" CRT it won't look so good on an LCD.

try a laptop that has atleast a 7600gt level graphic card.

here's a link that should help you search.

here a one i found.

Thanks for the input guys.

I was thinking something like 800x600 resolution with medium quality for most things. I don't have an issue with 17" laptops, but my sister does as a college student. Tablet PCs were tempting her earlier, but those generally have poor specs for gaming . . . especially oblivion. I'd also hoped I'd run across some people that have real life gaming experience with Oblivion on a laptop by which I could judge. 🙂

You'd be better off with a $1000 gaming pc and a $1000 laptop for school...

Graphics cards slaughter battery life and increase the heat output dramatically in laptops.

A $1000 PC will slaughter a $2000 laptop nearly across the board in gaming.

Maybe so, but this is something I know won't happen . . . because I suggested it. 😛

macbook pro? you can dual boot to winxp using boot camp and the macbook pro has core duo and a mobility x1600xt in it!

i was gonna say the dell e1705, but i think thats a 17".

its a mobility x16000, but it performs the same as the x700. the macbook pro's gpu is greatly underclocked, so dont expect much performance out of it.

if you want laptop gaming your budget should be much higher. if its lower, you are better off getting a lower end laptop only capable of real college tasks like word processing/web and spending on a real pc.

i mean seriously how much do you have? a voodoopc Envy u:909 with dual NVIDIA Geforce 7800 GTX - 256 MB ...starts at 5k. XPS M1710 Special Edition Formula Red with 512MB NVIDIA® GeForce? Go 7900 GTX is $3,599
unless you can afford gaming laptops they are poor choice for college. break anything on a laptop and its not going to be easily fixable. where on a pc you can just swap a bit out by yourself generally without much hassle. and laptops are much more likely to break thanks to be toted around.

Oblivion is a poorly programmed game thats why. Unless the designers have a graphics card on their hands that nobody has seen.

1600 won't do for medium imo

get atleast 7800/7900 class card for medium to high
7600GT class might not cut it for the mobile

X1600XT is the middle range performer, like the 7600GT for nvidia.

seriously, get her a macbook pro! even if it is underclocked, you can use boot camp, boot into windows, and clock the gpu a bit higher...hopefully she wont use lappy on her lap!

how about the dell e1505?

Yeesh, you guys are overestimating what it takes to run Oblivion by a long shot. The only way you'd need SLI'd 7900 GTXs is if you were running at some ungodly high resolution of 2500x1500 or somesuch.

A decent Core Duo chip with a 6800 Go will run Oblivion fine at medium settings, no AA/AF, and a 640x480 or 800x600 resolution.

QFT

I've been looking into gaming laptops, you can easily find here on the forums an inspiron 9300 with a 6800go, that should be enough to play oblivion decently. From what I've seen, if your getting a gaming laptop it will have to be 17", since those are the only size laptops that fit decent dedicated gpu's like 6800go 7800go 7900go etc.

If you have the money, I would get a nice e1705, and buy a 7900gs go or 7800gtx go off of someone on the forums or on ebay and put it in yourself, from what I understand it shouldn't be too difficult. And this way you get a top of the line gaming laptop for way lower then retail cost.

Agreed. I get very decent and playable framerates (30+ outdoors, 50+ otherwise) on my 7800gs AGP at 1280x1024, no AA.

Interesting. Glad to hear from people that own these laptops and play Oblivion. Did a bit of reading on the Travelmate 8200, but leaning toward the Asus W3J for now 🙂

Keep the suggestions coming guys!

Yeah, you guys are definitely overestimating what it takes to run this game. I have no issues running it with a 7600GT @ 1024x768 med details no AA/AF and a 2.5ghz Opty 144. I usually get about 40FPS in dungeons, 30FPS in towns, and 25FPS outside.

Well your opinion doesnt really matter does it boys? My buddy has a X1600 Pro by Sapphire and he runs oblivion on 1024X768 on Medium settings... Thats fact. Look it up on google or on Anand's own GPU performance models. X1600 Runs Oblivion on Medium settings. there should be no debate here.

Negative, nobody's opinion matters but your own. 😀

j/k, you're right of course... the rampant hyperbole about hardware requirements of Oblivion etc., are crazy... In fact, I think it's more reasonable than FEAR by far...

i think thats because it doesn't actually exist yet. at least not that i have seen.

Or, much like all of their older titles, they program the game to push hardware.

Have you played the game? Its easily the best looking environments in gaming today.

Gee, do you wonder why it runs slow?
