A friend of mine is currently rocking with a 3 year old Dell Inspiron 17" notebook.
She does not play high end games. Mostly she plays WoW (World of Warcraft).
Anyway the fan is beginning to quit so she's planning on getting an 'almost dream' laptop.
She doesn't have a preference for Intel, AMD, ATi, or NVidia. Just something that will run her games spiffy. Although given her budget I'm thinking AMD/ATi may be more viable just for cost purposes.
So basic requirements:

$1,000 (or less)
Mid-range graphics card.
Wish list (dont need but if you know of a deal...):

1920x1080
blu-ray
I know about the Gateway FX-P-7805u (although they dropped the 1920x1080 to 1400x900 boo-hiss) which has a street of $800 ish.
The alienware M17 for $1k is vaporware.
I did a quick check of the forums and found a thread 3 months old. Unfortunately most of the links have since expired. I did find a possible decent one from newegg:
