Gaming in XP - nothing works

I recently bought a sony vaio laptop and i'm noticing that all of the sudden many games i use to play on my old machine (with XP Pro as well) don't run at all. They all classically start up to a black screen and then quit to the desktop.
The current games i've tried are Black and White, Worms Armageddon, RealMyst, Prince of Persia 3D, and a few others i'm afriad i've forgotten.
I've patched them all, updated windows with everything, including the tid bits that i didn't really want (framework). Tried all sorts of compatibility modes (all that did was cause actually error messages).
Nothing seems to work.

Some of the companies, like lionhead acknowledge there is a problem and there will be a fix "soon". Other companies, like the one that created prince of persia don't even have the old updates on their servers let alone any intentions of new ones (that i could find).

What's bothering me more though is that all these games worked great on my computer i built at home but now all of the sudden they don't work on a far more advanced "professionally" built laptop? I'm sorry, but that doesn't make much sense.
Can anyone clue me in on why suddenly XP won't let me run anything outside of its "approved" software list.
Or maybe clue me in on how to get a few of the above working?

System Specs:
2.5 Ghz P4 Mobile
Geforce FX 5600Go
Sigmatel Audio
Sony Vaio GRT-100P

Any help would be great.

Worms Armageddon requires a patch (which you presumably applied on your other machine). I don't know about the rest.
