So, it makes virtually no difference in gaming, just like Duvie has kept trying to tell people. Oh well, they probably won't listen to you either, Thugs.:( I guess to get idiots to listen, you just have to lie. Hey, it sure seems to work for Intel. Look how many Celerons they've sold to people who don't know any better.

well, at least it really doesn't 'hurt'.

Yeah, especially if you need to do anything else that's processor-intensive at the same time you're gaming.:D

You think all of the people who do DC don't game?:p I don't turn off my client, whether I'm gaming or not, and the gaming doesn't suffer, but man, the protein folding client definitely does!

That's the point, Thugs, if you have an HT-enabled machine, you don't have to have a dedicated system. Duvie did some tests while gaming and running SETI at the same time, and neither suffered hardly anything (like 2 or 3 fps in the game and a minute or two slower on the SETI WU). On an AMD system, one or the other will suffer very, very much.:(

Unless you are really running heavy programs ,
turning HT off could be a good idea.

though its just a marginal difference.. maybe not even noticable

What... no Descent3 Secret2 timedemo min/max/avg? :p

Hey, if you wanna try something for kicks, enable SMP on QuakeIII and see if that gets HT's mojo working at all. :)

And I was about to ask where your Elite status disappeared to, THUGSROOK, when I noticed that... yeah. :Q Mine's gone too. Oh well... as long as AnandTech Moderator keeps coming to dinner in that slinky leopard-print outfit of hers, I guess I'll count my blessings. ;)

oh, BTW before i forget.....

anyone trying to run the X-Isle Tech Demo, it needs to be in W2K compatability mode.

and for those that dont know, X-Isle Tech Demo is a very very old tech demo of the FarCry engine. (NV only)

:)

Ever since I started backing up my DVD collection (and soon to start transferring my home movies to DVD), I've been craving a P4 w/HT... Just for that very reason.

It's obvious from some of Duvie's tests that his Radeon 8500 video card is maxed out in some heavy gaming applications so that changing around other configurations isn't going to affect his gaming results much, if at all. Thugsrook's test platform, though, is probably towards the upper end for a gamer, so his gaming test results seem pretty meaningful. I take his test results to indicate that, other than increasing your 3dMark score, a gamer isn't going to see much difference one way or the other by turning HT on or off (though if you intend to multitask while gaming it seems like it would be a good idea to leave HT on). Also, I assume if you run a game built for HT (like possibly Q3A with SMP on), that it will run faster with HT on.

Now off to run 3dMark with HT off, and then switch it back on for everything else.

Yeah my card was more of a limiter but I think Thugs is showing the same results I got in single mode....

I think we need to get him to run some dual task and see what he gets......

Also FPSguy I did run several different resolutions to avoid cad limitation so I think my results are pretty accurate and defintely good with the multitasking since a few other ATers here and at BE and Hardforums have seen the same thing....

I guess they finally revoked my Elite status!!!!!

They didn't revoke it Duvie, it got nuked with the forum upgrade along with all the other 1337's ;) Your next rating would be Lifer now at 10,001 post.

BTW Thugs, great job, just goes to show Duvie wasn't some insane, raving lunatic. Well OK, that's stretching it a bit j/k :p but still damned fine work from you as always

Yeah, it kills them HT actually works and isn't just marketing hype. Don't sweat it though brudda, the numbers don't lie and you have the empirical data on your side.
