Gaming - Geforce 7800 GTX for Gaming : 2x256MB SLI or 1x512MB?

I am buying a new computer, and trying to decide between the two solutions :

An SLI with two Geforce 7800 GTX 256MB
or
One Geforce 7800 GTX 512MB

I am getting the computer as a gift, and I am lucky to have plenty of $ room to buy the best possible graphic solution. Except for a 2x512 SLI. I also, unfortunately, cannot wait for the next generation cards that might come out soon. My order has to be placed this week.

Anandtech.com's benchmarks/tests seems to give the lead the the SLI configuration, but not by much at all. And the price for either solution is roughly the same.

And even if the SLI solution seems to be slightly more powerful, it also requires a bigger PSU and probably generates more heat...

What would you advise?

Thanks ofr any input!

i would wait... already the r580 are under mass production and sample model are out meaning its getting released this month. so if you buy your card now its will be worthless. x1900xt is suppose to beat a 7800gtx 512mb by 25% according to some sources like the inquirer. Nvidia will strike back with G71 but G71 is looking like its coming out mid feb so ati may enter the market 1st "ironic". anyways ati will launch its awesome mobo R580 crossfire that fixes all the issue it had with 1st gen crossfire mobo which seem to been have sloved as long as you get the latest rev (2.0) of dfi crossfire mobo. ATI has started to discount the R520 x1800xt and they go arround $450 (at newegss atleast) which is a sweet price if your just after one of thoes.

I don't think you have any choice here. You can buy two of these GTX @256mb at mid $400ish each virtually at any retailers with plenty in stock. Trying to find 512mb is virtually impossible at any price range, especially you have to place order this week.
Besides would a pair of 256mb in SLI will outperform a single 512mb? Any one?

Even a pair of 7800gt's will outperform a single 512gtx in most cases, so unless you desparately want to spent a lot of money I'd get dual gt's. Dual gtx will be even faster, but the improvement is not proportional to the $300 extra you'll spend on em.

in 16 days the 7800gtx 512MB wouldn't be worth $1000 or $750 and that is if you can find them at that price. a cheaper $600 video card should destroy it 🙁 ... i
