Gaming for a pre-schooler

Not sure if this is the right forum. My daughter's 6th birthday is coming up and we thinking of splurging a little for her. One thought was to get her a Nintendo DS since it's $129 at Dell and I have a GC there.

Are there games that are appropriate for her age on the DS? They can be educational, but we also want her to have some simple fun on it as well.

Also, how sturdy is it? Her 4yo brother will also want to play with it. He's usually gentle with electronics. I've let him play with my phone before. However, he is still only 4 and he somehow managed to shatter the lens of the camera on the phone.

Is there a good site that does reviews of kid friendly games?

My daughter's had a DS since she was 5 or 4, can't remember. There's lots of good/appropriate games for her to play. Super Princess Peach, the Kirby games, Mario Party DS, Cooking Mama, the nintendog stuff and latest thing she's been playing is the Style/Fashion game. Long as the good performance in school continues, I allow her to have as much fun as possible.

I gave my daughter my DS so that her and her brother would stop fighting over his DS. Of course, she broke it recently but that was because she tripped and fell while carrying it and not because she necessarily mishandled it.

There's also some educational games and fun games for girls on there though. Here's a list of some of the games I got my kids:

Crayola Treasure Adventures
Smart Girls: Playhouse
Disney Fairies: Tinkerbell
My Virtual Tutor: Reading Pre-K to Kindergarten
Math Blaster
Personal Trainer: Math

Of course, there's also the standards like Mario Party, Mario Kart, etc.

Beware, NDS is the gateway drug of the video game realm!

It's not made of steel but it's sturdy enough and Nintendo has typically had by far the best child-appropriate game selection of any of the console mfrs.

My daughter has had hers for a bit over 3 yrs. now. However, my nephews...theirs died a few months in after receiving it. Just have to make sure that they take care of their stuff.

We got her a DSi, so I use her old pink DS now... lol. MP DS is better than the MP on the Wii, actually. MP=Mario Party.

I considered giving my GF's 4-year-old daughter a DS, but I was worried about her banging up the touchscreen and losing the stylus.

I ended up giving her my old GBA SP because that thing is built like a tank.

Thanks everyone. I went ahead and got the DSi from Dell (didn't know there was an i, XL, etc 🙂 ). Now, to go get the games suggested here. I'm guessing I should rent first to make sure she likes them.

Thanks to tk149 for the GBA suggestion. I asked my sister if her son (now in HS) still used his gameboy so that I can give it to my son.
