Gaming comp I assembled through Newegg, your thoughts?

You could go AMD for either a little more or a little cheaper, depending on what you spend. I believe there is a eVGA 7800 GT and eVGA AMD socket 939 MOBO combo going for pretty cheap that could save you some $.

Oh god.
1. price/performance
2. on-die memory controller
3. anyone who has gamed on an intel machine, then gamed on an AMD machine will almost invariably tell you that the AMD is better.

Because AMD > Intel in gaming. Don't be lazy. Read the benchmarks. (Although it really doesn't matter... most of the time it's 5-10% diff.)

Also, it's more economical to go AMD route. Your P4 setup is $480 for CPU/Mobo. You can easily get a Dual Core X2 3800+ and a nice NF4 SLI board (or ATI Xfire) and probably $30-40 left over.

for gaiming amd has held the lead for a while, and you can get a daul core opteron and overclock it nicely for about what you are paying for that p4. Also if you can afford a little extra go for an xfi over the audigy, overtime you will notice the difference (depending on what speakers you have or are planning on getting).

Amd gives you better "bang for your buck", In my opinion. $200 worth of amd processor vs $200 worth of intel processor (all other components being equal) will show the amd outperforming intel.

That being said there is nothing wrong with intel if that is your preference. Performance margins are usually pretty close.

PS. Sli is overrated in my opinion. By the time its is fully supported (if it ever is) you will probably be wanting to upgrade your system, anyway. Dont spend money now on sli/xfire.

all of that is correct and I have proved the #3 question and I had the cpu your goign to get all that computer is good for is to be your heater for your house this winter

Probably going to have to replace the stock heatsink. I had a 3.4ghz Prescott, and it throttled at stock speeds. I've got water cooling on the way for my P4 engineering sample, cause it also starts throttling around 3.4ghz

What resolution are you going to be gaming at? If you are going to go less that 1280x1024 the CPU becomes the limiter rather than the graphics card, if you are going to run at 1280x1024 or higher, any current CPU will be fine(3ghz P4, or much better A64 3000+), because you'll be graphics card limited.

Actualy for the price you are paying, I would recomend an X2 3800+, DFI lanparty Ultra-D, 2x1gb sticks of OCZ PC3200 value ram. That will give you a faster, cooler running, more future proof machine, for the same price, without the headaches of dealing with hot and inefficient power hungry P4's.

Yes, X2 processors are dual core CPUs. The 3800+ is popular because it can usually be overclocked to 4800+ speeds, and the extra l2 cache of the 4400+ and 4800+ isn't much help for most users.

Socket 939 dual-core Opterons(165, 170, 175, 180) are also pretty popular with the Anandtech crowd. I would rather have the X2 3800+ myself.

I would go with that GPU Mobo combo.

I myself am getting this X2: http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=A64-38CDBX

Its the toledo core with more L1 cache than the manchester, I havent really been able to find it many places. Can anyone answer how much of a performance boost this will give over the manchester?

none, because it has the rest of the cache disabled..the 3800 X2 has 2x512k cache weather it's the manchester or Toledo core, the Toledo's overclock a little better supposedly.

Edit: it does have more L1 cache..didn't realize that, but it's not gonna make much differance if any.

So would it be better to get a manchester from a reputable dealer like newegg? I really dont mean to hijack this thread...

How's this sound, instead of the previous, take the vid card mobo combo, amd x2 3800+ as pointed out and a couple 1 g sticks of 400 mhz geil ram?

Edit: How much of a performance difference would I be looking at if I downgraded from 64 X2 3800+ to just a 64 3800+?

It might be cheaper and faster, but thats only because people havent begun taking full advantage of multi threading. I suggest you stay with the X2.

I think this'll be my last question, with these upgrades am I going to be able to use my old Win XP Home still or will I need to get a 64 bit edition or something?
