Hey all,
I'm in the process of (co-)starting a gaming/LAN center and was working on the computer designing process. Here's what I came up with; whaddya think? (Not looking for absolute top of the line per se, unless it's absolutely necessary.)

Artec CSM-56 52X ATAPI CD-ROM Drive
Coolmax CV-580-GRAY Mid Tower Case (Gray)
Logitech MX518 Gaming-Grade Optical Mouse
Biostar K8T890-A9 Via K8T890 Athlon 64(FX)/Sempron Skt939 DDR ATX Motherboard w/Audio, LAN, RAID/Serial ATA
Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 500W Power Supply
PNY Geforce 7600GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card
Sennheiser HD201 Closed Back Headphone
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Processor (Venice) Socket 939
2 gigs of RAM per system
Gaming keyboard, probably the Zboard series with interchangeable keysets

Offhand it'll run games like WoW, AC2, Call of Duty, Everquest, and maybe a few more eventually.

Anything need to be added or upgraded? Again, it's STRICTLY gaming oriented. I'm thinking all the systems'll be the same so that no one complains about "hey, I wanted to use that computer because I like the case more" or "has more memory" or anything like that.

Oh, and what's the diff between the Athlon cores (Venice/San Diego/Hammerhead/etc.)?

that 7300 isn't going to run anything worth a damn.

you would need at least a 7600GT to get me to come to your store and pay you money to play games on your systems.

and there is nothing in that system that requires a 500 watt power supply.

even if you upgrade to a 7900GT you could use a quality 300 watt.

i say save $40 per system and get a 400 watt fortron.

don't mean to steal your thunder, but it's very tough to keep up a lan center when new graphics card comes out every 6 months.

you'd need at least a 7600gt or equivalent to run the latest games.

or hey an X1800gto if you want more image quality and if you can find it cheaper also a bit faster. Otherwsie 7600gt. 3200+ processor. More graphics less processing power is fine for gaming actually much better. Fortron 450W $50 quality power supply or 400W.

Would Radeon or nVidia be better with the Athlons, or doesn't it matter?
No idea where I got the idea that the 7300 was good...

And is the Venice a good core choice?

1.) Doesn't matter
2.) Yes

My comments
Power supply way to high for that system
You could go down to 3200 or 3000 Venice and be fine. Your GPU is going to be your bottleneck when gaming with that system.
If your running a LAN you'll sef need headphones not speakers.

Edit: Idk how the prices are on the Opertrons right now, but if they are good you could get a Opty 144 and overclock the heck out of it on stock cooling.

Would the opteron be noticeably better for gaming, or isn't there a huge difference?

Opteron if you chooes to overclock your gaming systems. Otherwise the 3200+ will do you fine.

Exactly....and my reasoning behind that is a good overclock down the road may save you an upgrade in processor later on.

And we all know that Opertrons are great overclockers.

Ok guys, Opty seems to be the concensus. Next step: I got my 1.8 gig p4 up to 2.4; 2.4/1.8=1.3333333333333333, so a 3000+ opty at 1.8 gigs would overclock to the same 2.4, correct?

No.....Every processor overclocks diffrent. Diffrent multipliers, ext. An opetron should give you a much better and stable overclock than a P4.

Every gaming center I've seen has died in less than a year... maybe it's just the area's I've lived in, but there never seems to be a market that wants to pay to play on someone elses computer.
