Gaming Build - Upgrade from X3

System will be used mostly for gaming. I currently have an AMD X3 system that holds its own, but its time for an i7 core. While looking on newegg, I found this interesting combo deal. I haven't looked at computer components since last summer, so I am not sure of this setup.

Yeah. Unless you really got the upgrade bug. Your system looks more than capable.

Just toss in a 5870 and you'll have a minor cpu bottleneck... but thats it!

For gaming, i7 is not necessary whatsoever, imo. Any quad-core, or even tri-core for that matter (and even into the archives of dual core!), can game really well. Your system is more than capable, so just buy a new GFX for now, and when your machine really goes obsolete, you can pick up new upgrades for probably much cheaper. DDR3, 1366/1156, cheaper SSDs, etc.

You have absolutely no reason to upgrade, especially if you overclock. My x3 is running at 3.8ghz so you might have an upgrade path that wouldn't cost you a dime if you're not overclocked as it is.

New video card is your best bet, get the extra storage space if you really need it.

Thanks for the input everyone. I currently am overclocking only a little bit, as I haven't had enough time to really get some work in on it.

For now I will just take a look at the newer video cards and some X3 overclocking that others have done.

Also, the Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-UD4H motherboard I have only supports DDR2 from what I'm seeing.

Not being a video card expert, what exactly do I get upgrading from my Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 1GB to a XFX Radeon HD 5850 1GB. The price for the 5850 is more than double what I paid for the 4870. I am just wondering if its worth the upgrade price.

The main difference I see is the increase in stream processors from 800 to 1440, though I'm not what exactly that translates into. Also, the memory clock increase from 900MHz to 1000MHz.

Can't you just buy another 4870 and Xfire that?

Please also let us know what games you are having issues with specifically.

Gotta go with this.

$180 ------> for HD 4870 X 2

If you feel like you have to spend more, move your OS/Apps to a Gen2 SSD.
