Gaming Build memory question

First of all let me say that I am not an expert when it comes to this stuff, last build was before DDR2, before dual channel, some years ago.

Well, I am looking to get a C2D system.
Planning to get:

Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 (To overclock without spending a bundle)
C2D 6400
I have a 7800GT that I will use for now

Regarding the memory, because of the high prices I was thinking of purchasing this set first

and maybe a few months from now when prices are lower, get this to add to the system:

I definitely plan to overclock the memory to at least 800Mhz.
These two sets seem to be the same type of memory just different size, is that accurate? are the timings the same?

A few important questions are: can these two sets work together in the system to give me 3GB of memory, and is there ANY disadvantage to running these sets in Dual Channel together? Can that even work in that configuration or will they lose dual channel capability? Does the difference in size affect anything? I dont know much about dual channel.

Would the 2 512s by themselves allow me to play BF2142 pretty well?

You're correct by going with the 2x512mb for now. Waiting until prices get realistic is smart. Get the other things that are solid buys, like a better PSU,

Will those 2 512s be fully compatible with the 2 1GBs?
and will all 3GB be able to run in dual channel mode? does that cause any slowdown as opposed to 2x1GB running in dual channel?
