Why the Z97 board?

How about:
i3 6100 / i3 4160
H110 / H81

Or even put an i5 into a cheaper board?
 
If you're looking to game on a budget I would consider picking up a used 2600K off ebay and overclocking it, or you could build around an AMD FX-8350 which is cheaper with plenty of power. Otherwise I'd spend a bit more money and just get skylake parts for better futureproofing and ease of finding parts down the road.

My build... (the motherboard was 15% off but that expired yesterday.. I threw in a cheaper motherboard.. the first link, as an alternate choice.. there's plenty of Z170 mobos in this price range)

If you want to save money, scale down the case and power supply, if you are ordering any.. a small case is all that's needed, no more than $50. This one will fit everything. I speak from experience. The front audio ports on this case are fragile and give out pretty quick, that's the only downfall with it. Don't repeatedly plug and unplug stuff in the front audio ports.

I've got a total price of $711 with the more expensive motherboard and $668 with the cheaper motherboard. Add in that video card and you are at $915 and $873 respectively. I pay no tax at newegg in this state.

What kind of Mac? Neither of those games are intensive, assuming it's a newer Mac why not let her game on that for a while before dropping a grand?
