Gaming behind a Firewall

I'm trying to game behind a firewall. When I connect directly to my cable modem I get EXCELLENT pings. Just about all the servers in UT2004 are under 150, most are under 100. But when I plug it into my router the pings increase a lot. Does port forwarding help? How exactly do I do this? I know the computer that I have on wifi gets even worse pings! Thanks for any help!
 
try turning on the DMZ in your router setup, and seeing if it works better. if it does, then port forwarding will help, if not, then no. don't leave DMZ on all the time - it's a security risk, but a good way to troubleshoot
 
I have a friend who plays CS over a wireless connection to a lan and gets great pings for the lan games he plays with his buddies.

I've never personally had any ping or speed issues with any of my firewalls. You shouldn't either, since your router/firewall should run at 10/100, which is WAY faster than the internet connection coming in to your network.

My guess is that something is wrong with your router/firewall. Check for any firmware updates and such. Maybe test with another router/firewall and see if that helps.

Port Forwarding shouldn't make any difference.

From my understanding there's a difference in theoreticle throughput and latency which is my problem. I tried turning on DMZ for my computer. What happened was weird, though. I couldn't get an actual ping from within the UT2004 game wizard...all servers came back N/A. So I tried out The All Seeing Eye and I got good pings. I went to a server and I started out with 50ms ping. Over the course of a few minutes that quickly jumped the 200ms then 500ms where it stayed.

Could there be something that I'm not thinking about? Thanks!
 
Recommend upgrade or reload the firmware. Poor wireless connection quality will definitely increase latency. Port forwarding should not significantly increase pings or increase much at all. Could be a hardware problem.
