Gaming and Overclocking AMD Questions

I posted a while ago about overclocking a 950MHz AMD T-Bird, but I broke down and bought a 1.4 Gig T-Bird instead. If I'm running a lot of first person shooters, is it still valuable to overclock the CPU, or is 1.4 good enough for CounterStrike and others? I'm running it on a EPOX 8k7a with DDR Ram, and out of an ABIT Siluro Geforce2 with 64 megs of SDRAM. Also, I was thinking about doing the pencil trick on the CPU without overclocking it, just so that I can forego the hassle of taking off my heatsink and fan later if I do decide to overclock. I figured this would be safe, but am I wrong? Help would be really appreciated, because I'm going to start assembling my system next week. Thanks a lot! 🙂

*Edit* My L1 connections don't look like they're even severed. Is this my poor eyesight or is this CPU factory unlocked?

dont strain your eye sight......all 1.4's come unlocked.....lucky for you ...you dont have to mess with a xp2000 tryin to unlock it.....even littler.......

i run my 1.4 tbird at 1.5.......if your able ...and have good cooling ..go for it

Lucky you. When I got my Thunderbird 1.33 I went as far as taking off my rubber bumpers off my CPU.Which I haven't put back on yet. And didn't bother to close my L1 connections before I had everything installed.I here I was lucky I didn't crush the core. And this was my first majot build with cpu,mobo,v-card,and case.So I have major spring cleaning to do now. If I would have known the 1.4's did not need unlocking I woulda splurged the extra to get it.
But I can run my 1.33 at 1500 stable. Also gives me 4865 on 3dmark2001se with alittle help from powerstrip 😀
Anyways, happy gaming, and O/C'ing
