Gaming and high res IPS monitors

Hello, I'm thinking about getting a new monitor. The problem is that I need a monitor for both photo work and gaming. Also, I need a lot of real estate.

It seems like the HP 27 inch IPS (don't remember the exact name) can do everything I want.

The problem is that I like my computer to be completely quiet so I never use the fastest video cards. It's been fine on my 1920x1200 monitor but I'm afraid that it is going to be a problem with a higher res screen.

I'm thinking about running the games in lower than native resolution but I'm not sure how that would look?

Any other suggestions?

I don't notice my 7970 during normal operations at all. Actually my CPU fan puts out more noise. Though it's pretty quiet overall too.

Having a good case helps a lot. (I have a Fractal Design Define R4.)

Do you have enough desk real estate to use your existing monitor and just add another one? I used a 1080p monitor for gaming, and a U2711 for everything else. My system is fast, but not fast enough to handle 1440p at 60fps with high settings. I tried using 1080p on the U2711, and it looked fairly soft.

Running lower than native resolution looks bad, unless you can run games in a window.

Give me a break, you're not SOL. Just game at full res or game in a window and stop worrying about stupid stuff. You can get a quiet powerful video card.

I had a 2560x1600 monitor in 2007 and I gamed on it with a Geforce 7950x2
