Gaming / all purpose laptop

My cousin is in the Marine Corps. and had asked me to pick him out a laptop after the netbook he bought wasn't satisfying him. He'll be home for Thanksgiving and wants it by then.

He will primarily use the laptop for browsing the internet, maintaining his music library, video chatting with family, and playing games. I feel that he might want to watch movies on it as well, so a screen with a native resolution of at least 1920x1080 and a Blu-ray ROM drive would be a plus.

The price range he's looking at is $1200-$1600 including tax and shipping.

I've been looking at a Dell Studio XPS 16 system with a Blu-ray/DVD burner drive and a Radeon HD 4670 for around $1500.

I haven't been keeping up with the laptop market recently. I'm not sure if that's a good choice or not. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Best Buy usually has some great deals on gaming laptops. They might not have Blu-Ray or super high resolution screens, but they're still priced extremely well.

However, if you don't need quite that amount of gaming power, that Dell might be a good deal.

If he wants to play today's modern games at a decent rate he'll probably want something with a 260m GPU or the ATI equivalent. What kind of games exactly is he interested in? Look at ASUS and Sager brands. They each make a few models he may be interested in. Sager is only sold online though as far as I know. PCTorque and ExoticPC both sell these brands and have a very high CS rating.

See, he claims that all he'll want to play is World of Warcraft and Team Fortress 2. So I'd guess the 4670 would be good enough for that. But I'd like to future proof his notebook as much as possible for his price range.

I see Newegg has a few laptops with the 260M gpu in that range. They don't seem to have an ATI 48xx series gpus though. according to http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html those are above the 260M on ATI's side.
