anyone used gametap that can give a thumbs up or down?

i used a service like it way back in the day and I cancelled it after 2 months. It required a bulky and buggy authentication program to be constantly running, downloads were long (early days of DSL), and the selection was crappy.
It looks like gamefly's selection is much, much better. how about the rest? any problems using this with vista?

doh! meant gametap

doh don't know why i said gamefly, i meant gametap - this hot deal.
pretty sure gametap has some sort of download system. i doubt publishers would have it any other way.

it uses a propreitary download system. Download speed is okay. There is no authentication other than your username and password, which both can be saved. You must play the games throught the gametap system. I've been using it for the Free games the last few months. Been playing psychonauts and want to play Thief: Deadly Shadows. I've had very few problems with the system or playing the games.

I haven't subscribed to Gametap, but I have downloaded their software for a free account and I have used the system for a few weeks...

You use their client to download the game, and every time you want to play the game you start the Gametap software, and you can start the game from there.

I basically dl'ed it so the kids would have some new games to play every few days... they can try Megaman, Jaws Revenge, other old arcade titles from years ago.

If you subscribe (which I haven't) you can access games like Hitman, Myth II: Soulblighter, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, X-Com: UFO Defense, Myth III, Civilization III Gold Edition, Command & Conquer, Homeworld I and II, Heroes of Might and Magic I, II and III, and Empire Earth.

Now the real question is: Is it worth $60/year?

That question is a little harder to answer.

But the system seems to work fine and I haven't had any problems with it.

Hope this helps....

Yep as others mentioned its mostly older games, but its nice for those who want to play some older games they missed or really enjoyed. I haven't played it much but it does work pretty well.

Some notable titles that weren't mentioned:

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2
Icewind Dale 1 and 2
Huge library of C64 games
X-Com: Alliance
2-3 Hitman titles
FarCry
Lots of arcade fighting games like SF through SF3 etc.

Quite a few others as well. If you were looking for some titles you missed 2-5 years ago there's definitely some good ones in there. I saw a preview for some Wing Commander games...looking forward to those showing up. Would also be great if some MW games popped up!

the selection seems much, much better than the service i tried 4 years ago. several games i wouldn't want to buy seperately from a bargain bin, but for $5/mo would probably be worth it.
my only reservation was the emulation/authentication software. but it sounds like it's working well.
I'll give this a shot. thx.

It seems worthwhile for $5 a month, but I have other things to occupy my time.

I think it's worth it. Some good games include Far Cry, Civ4, Hitman, Pirates, Toca Race Driver3, Rainbow Six series. Downloads are a bit slow, though once you download the game 2 people can play with the same account on different computers.

it's definitely worth it for the coming year - Sam & Max episodes, and a few other games will be on Gametap day of release.
