this happens everyday, and for a lot more merchandise than that.

when i worked at sears a guy walked out with a garbage bage filled with 50+ pairs of dockers.

we weren't too friendly when we stopped him.

Do you suppose you're authorized/entitled to tackle someone in a situation like that?
I think it should be allowed, if it's not already.

Some stores have a "no touch" policy, and things have changed since 97. But they way i look at it, if they're desperate enough to steal like that then they wont mind kicking your ass to get away. So i made sure i made the first impression.

Liability. I've worked retail at many stores and the ONLY person authorized to stop the person on the way out is the manager or acting manager at the time (assistant, etc.). You are supposed to try and delay the person until the police can be called, or other.

MOST stores have this policy in their employee manuals, but if they try to hit you you should be able to defend yourself, and in that case the self-defense would take precedence.

Legally he could, as it's his property (or the store's).

Legally he couldn't. Use of force to protect an entity's property is not allowed by law, unless it is in self defence. The laws are different state to state, but in Texas were we can kill for a lot aof reasons this isn't one of them.

That is a shit[/b]ty law.
