Best Shooter:

Gamespot Editor?s Choice:Crysis
Reader?s Choice: Crysis

Why Crysis? It's the shooter that pushes the limits of gameplay and technology in almost every way possible. Yes, it's got the most advanced graphics seen to date, but it's also a deeply rewarding shooter that requires you to think as much as react. Dropped into large levels, you're constantly making decisions, whether you're conscious of them or not. Which approach do you take to the objective? Go stealthy or guns blazing? How about using your nanosuit's powers to vault over a fence or onto a rooftop to hide from the enemy? Use cloak and stalk your prey? Do you even want to get in a firefight right now?

One of the most rewarding moments that we had in Crysis was during an escape from a military base at night. Running into the woods, we stumbled into a large squad of soldiers hunting us. The ability to make your own tactics on the fly let us suddenly slow down to use the suit's cloak powers, silenced weapons, and headshots to raise havoc in the enemy's ranks. Suddenly, the hunters were the hunted, and they were panicking at being picked off one by one. This wasn't a "stealth only" sequence; we could have gone guns blazing or bypassed the enemy altogether. It was this open-ended, emergent gameplay--the ability to let us tackle our challenges in whatever way we wished while requiring us to think on our feet that helped the game squeak past impressive shooters such as the highly addictive Call of Duty 4, the extremely polished Halo 3, the creepy and distinctive BioShock, and the jam-packed game known as The Orange Box--all of which are genuinely exceptional games in their own right that are absolutely, positively worth your while. But for being able to make us feel like an incredibly lethal and intelligent predator in a way that perhaps no other game has done, Crysis takes this award.

GAME OF THE YEAR:

To be announced?.

Currently of the 12 games, CRYSIS IS IN THE LEAD!

Aside from the surprising reader and editor recognition for Crysis, I am surprised that Bioshock doesn't get any merit on the list.

I am pleased that reader's recognized The Witcher to be the best RPG across all platforms. Also to me, Supreme Commander was a better RTS than World in Conflict.

Wait a second - wouldn't Uncharted be an Action/Adventure game? Why isn't it even nominated?!

After reading your commentary at the end, it doesn't surprise me that you cross-posted this to PC Gaming

Yeah it is pretty and all but seriously...COD4 is the best shooter because of the awesome MP.

Plus Mass Effect > all other RPG this year.

Assassin's Creed is horrible. I'm sure Uncharted is better.

Worthless list but look where it came from.

I played the Crysis demo and it looked pretty good. Just sad that my rig (desktop in sig) has to play it on medium with little eye candy. It was top end like 2 years ago. (sigh)

I don't think I've ever been at odds with a GOTY list as much as I am with this one.

Terrible!

Personally, I think COD4 Single Player was mediocre when compared with Crysis. Heavily scripted and generally involved just waves of enemies coming after you until as you advanced through it's horribily linear level design. Only thing it had going for it was it's intensity and story. I don't like the MP of COD4 too much, just a general run and gun fest through environments that all the look the exact same, in this case destroyed urban cities.

Crysis is such a refreshing change from these incredibly linear and scripted levels I have come to expect. There are multiple paths to each objective. The environments are so open and thereare a variety of ways of engaging the enemy patrols. I can't believe all the hate coming on Crysis. I think its mainly because of the kind of PC needed to run it. The game would have gotten less negative press had it been released an year later, when the kind of hardware necessary to run it at 1920x1200 would have been released. It is an excellent game and the only other game that impressed me as much was Bioshock.

Maybe the editors are a bunch of folks like myself who think AC was a damn good game.

These are the people who allegedly fired Gerstman for giving Kane & Lynch a bad review, after Eidos paid a lot of money to advertise it.

The finest awards money can buy?

I think AC is a great game. GotY? Hardly. There are at least half a dozen games that come to mind that blow it out of the water, including Uncharted, Mass Effect, Mario Galaxy, and Ratchet and Clank.

Clearly another sign that when it comes to Gamespot, he with the most advertising dollars wins.

Crysis was pretty awesome. One of the best games ever.

The Witcher is too an amazing game.

I find it funny and a little ironic that the Anandtech forums are being overrun by console fanboys. :p

Fun factor wise, CoD4 was much more fun for me than Crysis. Sure, Crysis is less scripted and it looks great (CoD4 looks awesome too though), but the gameplay was too familiar with Farcry.

AC for adventure GoY? LOL, GS lost all my respect now, a little that was left over anyway.

Pretty much summed up my opinion of CoD4 versus Crysis. One is mainly flash with hordes of enemies, the other is more "free-form". Someone should come out with a mod for CoD4 turning all enemies into clowns; it's an amazing trick how 50 guys come out of one small building or room en mass.

As for Assassin's Creed for Goty... ummm... how does a borderline 80% (Gamerankings) game win? Oh right...

It didn't win GotY, only GotY for action adventure. It's not even NOMINATED for GotY.

I see all sorts of people complaining about AC for GotY, but it's not... so I don't get where all this bitching is coming from.

They didn't pay Gamespot enough.

Indeed. In fact, despite top-tier graphics, cool characters, summer-flick quality story, a movie-quality orchestral score and just plain fun action-adventure gameplay from beginning to end, Uncharted was nominated for ZERO awards at that site.

Shockingly this includes being omitted from one of the five slots in the 'Best PS3 Game' nomination list .

They've hated Sony's new console since before launch, so this shouldn't surprise anyone. Maybe Sony needs to also send money to them under the table... sad, but it's obvious that they are the most corrupt gamer site on the 'net.
