Best Shooter:

Gamespot Editor?s Choice:Crysis
Reader?s Choice: Crysis

Why Crysis? It's the shooter that pushes the limits of gameplay and technology in almost every way possible. Yes, it's got the most advanced graphics seen to date, but it's also a deeply rewarding shooter that requires you to think as much as react. Dropped into large levels, you're constantly making decisions, whether you're conscious of them or not. Which approach do you take to the objective? Go stealthy or guns blazing? How about using your nanosuit's powers to vault over a fence or onto a rooftop to hide from the enemy? Use cloak and stalk your prey? Do you even want to get in a firefight right now?

One of the most rewarding moments that we had in Crysis was during an escape from a military base at night. Running into the woods, we stumbled into a large squad of soldiers hunting us. The ability to make your own tactics on the fly let us suddenly slow down to use the suit's cloak powers, silenced weapons, and headshots to raise havoc in the enemy's ranks. Suddenly, the hunters were the hunted, and they were panicking at being picked off one by one. This wasn't a "stealth only" sequence; we could have gone guns blazing or bypassed the enemy altogether. It was this open-ended, emergent gameplay--the ability to let us tackle our challenges in whatever way we wished while requiring us to think on our feet that helped the game squeak past impressive shooters such as the highly addictive Call of Duty 4, the extremely polished Halo 3, the creepy and distinctive BioShock, and the jam-packed game known as The Orange Box--all of which are genuinely exceptional games in their own right that are absolutely, positively worth your while. But for being able to make us feel like an incredibly lethal and intelligent predator in a way that perhaps no other game has done, Crysis takes this award.

GAME OF THE YEAR:

To be announced?.

Currently of the 12 games, CRYSIS IS IN THE LEAD!

Aside from the surprising reader and editor recognition for Crysis, I am surprised that Bioshock doesn't get any merit on the list.

I am pleased that reader's recognized The Witcher to be the best RPG across all platforms. Also to me, Supreme Commander was a better RTS than World in Conflict.

Crysis must've had a direct link to the website in their executable since it looks like they got about a 30% voter turn out. ;)

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the final picks though, they're too easily skewed or influenced by other factors. I think it gives you a good idea though of what's worth buying and playing and I don't really have a problem with any of the finalists in the genres I'm interested in.

Supreme Commander - Forged Alliance should be the strategy game winner. It's made a lot of improvements over SupCom.

While it's nice to see something other than CoD 4 win everything (Gamespy), I can't help but feel that someone "blew" someone...

Seriously, who gives a shit what Gamespot think, especially after that farce.

How is Orange Box the best puzzle game? Orange Box is a collection of games. Portal is a puzzle game, HL2:E2 and TF2 are not.

Orange Box was mostly trash other than the gem of portal. HL2 games sucked and TF2 got old after 10 minutes. Only reason I got it was at the $25 dollar BB deal, and portal was definitely worth it at that price.

i disagree - i thought HL2: EP2 was far more compelling than HL2 or EP1, and I actually *wanted* to advance the plot. TF2 is great when you want over the top, comical fun.

I agree that on that part. HL2 EP2 was much better than the other two games. It still felt heavily scripted and linear however. I never really liked the Half Life 2 games.

What a joke of a list.

I agree, but it is gamespot, so I'm not surprised. World in Conflict is not a strategy game. It is a game where you have 4 units, and hurl them at the enemy, praying they do some damage so you get points to make 4 units to regenerate your losses, to hurl at the enemy, etc.
