Gameshark GBA Experience

I recently purchased a gameshark for gba. I started it up fine without the game. Once i inserted the game it doesnt start up at all. I tried the gameshark and game on a different gameboy and same issue. So does that mean i should return it for it not working or am i doing somthing wrong?
