Me and my friends are trying to connect our networks (across the city) via a VPN or some other connection in order to play games such as Generals and Armies of Exigo. So far we haven't had much progress except for with a program called LanAnywhere (we could actually see the games but couldnt connect to them). VPN seems to be a brick wall and we aren't totally sure about tunelling. Does anyone have any ideas?

Give details of connection methods (router or modem) , vpn termination device, ip address ranges for you and your friends and I will be able to help you resolve this. Also if any of you have norton or any other crappy windows firewalls running you will need to allow the ip addresses of each others networks in the firewall. eg 192.168.0.0/16 (192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255)

VPN will have massive overhead which will kill some games. I would personally setup a passworded server on the internet.

The problem with most VPNs is that they block UDP and/or broadcast packets. Most games use a broadcast packets to establish a connection with other players (basically to run the little chat set up when joining games). If you are playing a game where you can specify an IP address such as UT2k4 or Diablo 2 most VPN setups should work. If not you'll need a VPN that can forward broadcast packets. This can be done with OpenVPN, its a little tricky if you're not familiar with vpns but you should be able to figure it out.
