Games that were ahead of their time

I'd put my vote in for Anarchy Online. To this day, I don't think there's an MMORPG out there that is so deep. Too bad about the launch bugs.

Descent 1's co op multiplayer over the Internet was pretty ahead of it's time. And damn fun as well. Was the first multiplayer game I ever played.

And Descent Freespace was a freaking awesome space sim. Huge capital ships, massive explosions, squad commands, segmented damage, good cutscenes and a decent story.

Why is the space sim genre dead 🙁

I'm talking about games that only had a cult following but by today's standards were largely unsuccessful. Another one that comes to mind is Asheron's Call. ~8 servers, with peak load ~3000 players per server. I played that game more than any other to date, and most people have never heard of it. I think the learning curve turned most people away but it had a pretty unique world that I found much more fun to explore than, say, WoW. Also they tried to compete against Everquest when pay-to-play was not very common, and everyone that wanted to was playing EQ.

+10000

No other game has captured me like Asheron's Call. Everyone I told about it picked it up and played it for years and years. I put a solid 7 years into that game and gave it up about 5 years ago. It's funny, but eating breakfast this morning I was thinking about playing it again, starting from level 1 with no help.

Was on Frostfell as Maz, Mazeroth, Maza, Mazmerlin...
