The invention of chess pretty much revolutionised the games industry, right ? BTW, don't like it myself.

I can't BELIEVE you guys left Roberta Williams from Sierra and her early games off the list! Mystery House! All the early Sierra games were a huge part of bringing computers into homes of people who couldn't think of anything else they needed 'em for. :) In the late 80s a lot of people I know only bought computers for the gaming.

And wasn't Leather Goddesses of Phobos from 1986 with good ol' "Scratch and Sniff" one of the first if not THE first off-color game????

I think Warcraft II is the *classic* RTS that set the standards in that category.

Starcraft revolutionized on line gaming

Master of Orion II and Civilization for strategy

And of course, Doom is your classic FPS

Karsin: (or anybody else who's a master of orion II fan). Have you ever got it stable over a lan? I've played that game though more times than I can count, but it always crashes when we tried multiplayer over a lan. That's even with the 1.31 patch.

Civ/Civ2
Master of Magic/Master of orion/2
Xcom 1 & 2
Wizards's Crown & Eternal Dagger (the best RPG Tactical games)
Ultima 4 & 5
Galatic Gladiators
All those old TSR D&D games

I'm not much of a FPS guy..
The only driving games I ever got into were 'Stunt Car Racer' and 'Test Drive 2: the Duel' on my Amiga
Populous rocked! Anybody remember Ports of Call? Lemmings?

Actually the original Castle Wolfenstein started it all. I still fire up the old Apple II emulator every once in a while for that (along with Titan Empire, Aztec, and Swashbuckler).

Cmon guys! Final Fantasy 6 (3 in US) and Chrono Trigger were da sh*t. Squaresoft didn't need fancy full motion video back then to produce a great RPG.
And I didn't hear too many sidescrollers mentioned there. I mean Double Dragon and Ninja Gaiden for the ole' NES were fun for hours. You could pick them up at any time and start fresh.
The Simpsons and TMNT Arcade games: Fantastic. Back then, anyone could easily drop their last few bucks into an addictive fight with the Shredder or Mr. Smithers.
At least those are the games that stick out in my mind.

Check the July (or was it June?) issue of PC Gamer. They covered ten classic games that defined/revolutionized some genres.

Flashback was a great side-scrolling adventure/action game that was WAY before its time.

AND CHOPPER COMMANDO!!!!!!!!!

AHHH!!!! I love that game! It was made by some guy with pascal years ago. You need an old computer to play it right (i could never get moslo to get a good speed) but it is a blast! I am about to send him a letter with $5 in it to register, just because its that fun. I really should have like 7 years ago when I first played it. That is if the address is still correct :p

Anyone else play Chopper Commando?

Also, I need to add that I believe that Mario 64 was the most revolutionary console game of the 90's, if not maybe ever (well lets not go that far).

It single handedly brought the console market into 3D. Sure other games were sorta 3D and such, but that was what really really brought 3D. When Mario 64 launched not one person living I dont think didnt want it and didn't want to play it. Just Mario 64 sold millions of Nintendo 64's.

And heck, its still fun.
