I'm looking at writing an article on either games that changed the industry (i.e. Doom, Quake), or old games you play. Any input is welcome!

PC: Wolfenstein3D started the whole FPS thing, Doom took it to a new level, Quake ushered in the hardware craze

Console/arcade: Pong, Donkey Kong ('nuf said), Mode7 and FX chip on the SNES, SegaCD I suppose :)P), Mario64 on N64

ApacheXMD--Yep, Dune II never got its due. Didn't even make CGW's Hall of Fame. What a sorry state of affairs.

Anything from QQP...Solitaire's Quest, Lost Admiral
Mule (4 joysticks--Atari 800)

"Civilization" is a strategy game from the beginning of the 90's. It has a simple interface and simple idea, and is considered one of the true classics in strategy games, and is made by one of the kings in this area, Sid Meyer, who also made the top hit Alpha Centaury, which is a more futuristic version of "Civ".

You start at the year 4000 BC, and have to start a civilization from the ground and up. You walk around with your settlers and have to start a city, deal with babarians, competing civilizations, and such. Everything must be carefully planned - your government must be managed, production taken care of, and diplomacy with other nations.

You can win in two ways: Either by researching so far that you can reach man's ultimate goal and build a spacecraft that will take you to the distant star Alpha Centauri, or you can wipe out the competing civilizations and conquer the world.

You have 6000 years, until 2000 AD to do this, and it's not easy. The "easiest" way is to go down the military path, but it's more rewarding to research heavily.

Wonderful game, can be played for hours :)

Quake is da king! It single handedly forced me to upgrade from a blazin' 486. Then later got me deeper in debt when it forced me to get a 3dfx card. Plus that's the game that got me interested in gaming. For racing it was the original Need For Speed.

Wow thanks for all the input, they've all been really helpful. I'm looking for slightly specific genres and how they've changed, and Killbat said it nicely for FPS's, but how about other genres, like strategy (Civilization is a good one), RPG's, racing, and action?

No one probably even knows it, but Rail Road Tycoon was sid meier's first great game. Its incredible (RRT2 sux). It really redefined what sims could be. Quest for Glory is in a genre of its own and I doubt anything like it will be seen again. I still play the original sim city ocassionally (I want to beat that boring town scenario). That invented the sim genre. Mario brothers was the first platformer ever and was a great one. Mortal Kombat defined fighting games and the moves system. Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger are the best RPGs ever and I doubt will ever be surpassed. Mario 64 invented the 3D platformer. Mario Cart was an awesome game and invented the sub-genre of character based racing. I think the blue hedgehog Sonic redifined the platformer and made it faster, better looking, and just plain cool. Tetris is simply the best puzzle game and will be played for ages. What else... Hmm...

edit: Warcraft 2, definately made RTS what it is today. (love that game and still play it).

Civ/Civ2 for strategy still play Civ2
F19 Stealth Fighter for flightsim don't really play anymore, but it was great on my xt
Wolfenstein 3d don't play it anymore either, but without it, who knows if the fps genre would even exist

As ApacheXMD mentioned, if it hadn't been for Dune II, we wouldn't have had RTS games. Sure, they've added multiplayer, etc., but Dune II was the first....and, with the proper patch, not bad at all.

I loved Dune II!! It was an amazing game.. after Dune II I played C&C:RA and then regular C&C (briefly) and then Starcraft, which is still my favorite game.. I played WC and WC2 but they sucked fast.

For 3d games I've played Doom, Doom II, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, Quake II, Half Life, Unreal Tournament (best of all I mentioned), System Shock II, and others..

All those games played on the ol' Cyrix downstairs... boy I can't wait for a replacement for this P83.. :p
