Games that focus on swords/melee...

I'm really looking for a game that I'm not sure exists. I want something that is focused primarily (or totally) on melee with swords and/or other weapons that aren't guns. I enjoy the gameplay in JK2 and Jedi *Academy, but it's pretty basic as far as the lightsabers go. Are there any games out there that are multiplayer focused, or at least include enjoyable multiplayer modes, that focus on melee? Multiple move sets, special attacks, balance between different setups, etc. are all things that would be good.

Basically I'm looking for a multiplayer, free-moving 3d version of all the old console fighter games :)

Just getting rather bored with all of the FPS clones these days. Quake1(Quakeworld actually) is still the most enjoyable FPS game and very few games have come out with anything remarkable about them. UT2004 has some nice features, but I still would rather just play Quake 1. Or Soldat. My two favorite action games are made to run on systems from 10 years ago... sigh.

Edit: I meant "JK2 and Jedi Academy", as JK2 is Outcast, hence my original post had an odd statement. :)

I don't have an Xbox, nor do I plan on getting one... but thanks anyway :)

Prince of Persia have multiplayer? I've never actually played any of them, but I'd thought they were just single player games.

I actually have Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time as it was bundled with my video card... think I'll install it and check it out.

jedi academy is more involved lightsaber wise than outcast.
tho in outcast, the stun baton being better than the lightsaber in duels was hilarious.

you should prolly just pick up soul caliber 2 for xbox tho or guilty gear x/x2.

There was a co-op mod for Rune, a classic. Melee combat in the UT engine, was very simple but pretty cool.

Played Thief, it was fun. Haven't played the sequel (sequels?) though.

I actually have Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, it came with my video card, but I haven't played it. I'll check it out :)

And about the Xbox suggestions, I do not own an Xbox nor do I plan to buy one. But thanks :)

I guess I'm dreaming of a game that is nonexistant right now. Something that could incorporate teamplay on a large scale, groups of players fighting through a world with melee weapons (and possibly some magic involved). Or maybe someone could make a game that is like River City Ransom + online multiplayer capabilities :)

There are 3 Thief games. The last one, deadly shadows was very fun imo. Quite freaky in a few places.

The second lord of the rings game was exactly "fighting through a world with melee weapons (and possibly some magic involved)" But no multi-player :( .

I am pretty sure you can play hitman (1-3) in 3rd person. That was a very entertaing game as well. Far from the everyday first person shooter. I played Hitman 3 a bit, and played Hitman Contracts a lot more.

Really old-school would be Die by The Sword. Don't know if you can find that around anymore; you might have to check out Abandonware.

Regular Rune multiplay is very cool. Viking style weaponry, all melee (except you can lob all weapons at people - YES! There's something to be said for a game where you can jump off a ledge and chuck your 4ft longsword through someone's head before you hit the ground :D) Playing online sucks though due to all the jumping around...easy way to get kills and people do it all the time, so annoying.

I found 1 or 2 servers where it was banned however. Plenty were still playing a year or so ago.

Awesome lan game too btw.

Graphics are dated now but imo the exhilarating gameplay far overshadows that. There's rumour of a Rune 2 which, if it's still all out melee combat, i'll be onto in a split second.

That's what I was going to suggest. :D

Actually being able to control the arm and adjust the power of the swing with your mouse speed was very cool. Great voiceovers and one liners too.

There really hasn't been another game like it. There were some serious glitches though that really overshadowed the actual gameplay.

There's another new game coming out that will allow you to control the sword with your mouse, I can't remember what it is though. Oh it was Age of Conan.

Knights of the Temple. No multiplayer on the PC version. I don't know about the console versions though.

Rune is fine and it has some melee multiplayer as some have suggested. How about Blade of Darkness?? Once you get used to the controls its a great sword/melee action/adventure game with satisfying moves/combos with 4 different characters to choose from. Its pretty old but should still look fine today.

Eh... have been realitvely out of the loop as far as FPSs go, but I'm really into GuildWars right now. It's easy to learn but combat seems incredibly intricate as there are tons of powerful combinations of spells. It's probably the most tactically advanced of any "MMO" I've ever played. Skill combination choice, group build and communication are incredibly important. Though to be fair it really isn't an MMO.

Well the moves in Sands of Time are very good, but the sequel Warriror Within is even better with a lot more combo moves and deep combat (I believe it's better then Jedi Academy). Not sure about multiplayer though.

I assume you are thinking of Bushido Blade, which was definitely an awesome game. No health bars, and permanent damage. For instance, cut a person's leg and they couldn't use it anymore. You could fight one person forever if you couldn't land a hit, no timers or health bars. Lot more realistic than other games.

Mmm . . . Rune, I should install that next weekend. :)

How well you reckon it'll run on a i810 IGP or an FX5500? Shouldn't be too terribly bad.
