games running with W2k

Hi,

I am buying a PC and I am not sure about the OS (one more). Win ME is not an option. I am thinking if Windows2000 prof. Compared to Win98SE it is more expensive, more stable and more tempting (I know Win98 and NT, I wanna learn about W2k).

The only reason for not choosing wk2 and go with SE would be, if I would face much problems running games with w2k. Reading the forums, I got the impression that W2k with SP2 is not a bad choice for gamers. Is this true?

GO TO 2k... you will love it, and you will not regret it.. and if gaming is and issue.. my games run just as good (I.E. Quake 3, UT) or better!!.. go 2k...🙂 🙂 🙂

thanks to all of you, I feel much better and confident now to spending more money for W2K....

I play tons of games on my win2k pro machine, they are more stable..... but make sure you get DX8a, and the newest drivers for your video card

I also put my vote for W2K. I used to dual boot but that got to be a pain and I noticed that I wasn't using the Win98SE partition almost at all. Good luck

I can't say, that all games run more stable on 2K.

I have tried Cossacks and Black&White, both give me occasional exits to the desktop, and if I have the Hotline client running, it will crash, when I start Cossacks. Same thing with Blade of Darkness and I-War 2 demos.

Also a friend of mine can't get Counterstrike running on his PC, although I have not yet tried that one myself!

Can you help me, by the way?

System:

Win2K Sp2

Asus A7V133,TBird 1.33 4-in-1 4.31 installed
256MB
Asus V-7700

I am currently dual booting Win2k and 98SE cause the main game I play (EverQuest) has problems under 2K. I have a GF2MX with the latest drivers and I still get flashes of the desktop coming through the game scene. It seems to be a bit more choppy in 2K also. Anybody else an EQ player playing on 2K? I also get the no higher than 60Hz refresh rate problem, but I haven't put any real work into resolving that one.

Stuff works in 98SE and I don't have that much time to work on my 2K gaming problem, so I've left it alone. If I was to build a new system I'd more than likely just buy a copy of 2K for it and use that alone. So count my vote as pro-2K 🙂.

Games I've played under Win2k:
GLQuake
Quake2
Quake3
Unreal Tournament
Half-Life & Counter-Strike
Serous Sam
Diablo2
Tropico
Oni
Soldier of Fortune
Nocturne
Samurai Showdown2 (yes, a real PC version, not emulated)
Emulated SNES/Genesis/NeoGeo roms
Tribes2

I've only ever had one game not play under win2k (civ 2). And I tricked it into working, using vmware to run a win98 session, and playing it from there. Worked fine...

Some of the older win95 games aren't the greatest under 2k, but I actually had better luck running some real old dos games under 2k that just wouldn't work good under 9x.

my dual boot box will be a single 2k box the next time I get around to redoing the os's on it.

my Star Wars Racer, and Star Trek Armada didn't run under Win2k. Had to do inside Win98. Also most of EA sports games dont' do Win2k either.

With or without service pack 2, Win2k is the CHOICE. This is OS is the best one I have ever used for gaming or anything else. If you will be doing lots of gaming I strongly suggest OVER 128MB RAM, the latest service pack, and the latest drivers. Hope everything works out...

i play eq on 2k and it works pretty good sometimes i get a black box poping up over 3/4 of the screen for like a frame or two then its gone doesnt bother me enough to go to 98
also only in eq sometimes if i hold a key too long or something the sound will mess up then i have to push the key again to get the sound restarted its pretty annoying when i have mp3s playing in the backround and i push a key and the sound stops. i still dont know wtf is doing this

get 2k it the best ever

I am having trouble with Win2k in a couple of areas. I recently replaced my Voodoo 3 3000 with a Nvidia TNT2 16meg M64 and have been getting a "STOP" error ever since(KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED). I have the most recent video drivers for 2K from Nvidea.com installed. I do not use the latest service pack for the following reason so I don't know if it will help with this issue or not:

I am also unable to update my internet server list in Counter-Strike with any Win2K Service Pack installed(SP1 or SP2).

Anyone have any ideas?

I've ONLY used Windows 2k for about 6 months and I only have had 2k on my machine (no more dual boot) for about 3 months. Whoo.

Used 2k itself for over a year now and it's one of the best things I ever did to my PC.
