Games on Vista 64bit version?

If I go with the 64bit version of Vista will my 32bit games run at all? I heard CD2 chips don't work well with 64bit either is that true?

Whether the games run will depend on whether you have all of the necessary 32-bit libs installed for them, usually that's just the game itself and things like DirectX, SDL, etc. And If by CD2 you mean Core2Duo, then you heard wrong.
 
I have a few games and do not want to dual boot. Would it make a difference compatibility wise if the games are running in 32-bit Vista or 64-bit Vista. I know XP 64-bit had some major problems with compatibility.

Vista 64 was horrible for me almost nothing worked well, slower not faster, and too, too many problems. 32 retail is working well. My experience YMMV

I have a C2D rig and was planning on running Vista 32-bit OEM.

Am I sacrificing significant performance in future DX10 games (like Crysis) once I upgrade to a DX10 video card by sticking with 32-bit?

I really dont want to have to dual boot if at all possible.

And? What part of "only" don't you understand? The game will still run on a DX9 system, there's no way game developers are going to limit themselves to Vista-only systems for at least 2 years.

I suggest waiting a month before deciding whether to go 32- or 64-bit. By then, there will be tons of reviews of gaming on Vista-64. Right now, there's relatively few installs out there and few reviews.
 
Well I'd like to see specific performance and compatibility reviews / statements about
specific games and Vista.

In theory many games and other applications should run just fine under Vista 64, but
I think it's certainly possible that due to incompatibilities with the games' installer programs
(if they're using any 16 bit code), or with the games' copy protection viruses (oops I meant
drivers / libraries), or with the games' usage of incompatible sound technologies.

Games and other applications, for instance, that use EAX less than version EAX5
and/or games using DirectSound expecting to get hardware sound accelleration from that
will have a problem for sure.

Creative labs is working on an "Alchemy" dll that you can download the preview release of
to install in the directory of the games you have that do NOT use OPENAL but which use
EAX+DirectSound to try to make those games work with 3D / hardware accellerated sound
under VISTA. I don't recall that they had this for 64 bit as of yesterday but
maybe it's worth a look.

As far as I know you can't yet find graphics drivers for Nvidia 8800 series cards for
Vista or get fully functioning drivers for most advanced sound boards for Vista
(e.g. the Creative Labs Audigy series).

Vista's security features like UAC and mandatory driver signing in 64 bit edition
will further cause incompatibilities with certain games etc.

Just to add: I've read that any games that wish to use MS's new "Games for Windows" logo need to be certified to work on 64-bit systems, so upcoming new ones will have a good chance to work with 64-bit Vista.

But, as QuixoticOne mentioned, 64-bit Vista requires signed drivers. That means that they must be Microsoft certified before you can install them. That's an extra step (and expense) for hardware manufacturers, so likely hardware drivers for 64-bit will lag those for 32-bit and not see as many frequent updates. So, the quick patch nvidia puts out within days to fix some issue with the latest game release, might take a lot longer to appear for 64-bit Vista

But to release WHQL 32-bit drivers they must also have a 64-bit version too, MS would require the extra hoops without some incentive to jump through them.

Yes, but not every driver for 32-bit Vista requires WHQL cert. In my experience, the quickie fix drivers and the like often aren't.

I hadn't heard that getting 32-bit certs also requires a 64-bit version, though. You're right that should help get more 64-bit drivers out there.

And using a non-WHQL driver is a bad idea anyway so why not just wait a bit for the official release?
 
Game compatability isn't too bad with Vista-64. especially with games that came out in the last 2 years or so. Anything that has old 16-bit pieces like installers will have issues, as x86-64 dropped support for that. Performance has gotten pretty good with the last Beta Cat release, and I would really have to benchmark things carefully to find any difference, as subjective performance is about the same.

I use the onboard realTek sound on my mobo so the lack of EAX support under Vista isn't effecting me.

My only major complaint right now is that Belkin hasn't released a 64-bit driver for my Nostromo speedpad. I get bad carpal tunnel in my wrist if I play shooters with a keyboard, so the inability to use my speedpad normally is a bummer.

The current Nforce audio drivers available via windows update pop/crackle a bit, and unfortunately the current 64-bit Vista Realtek drivers BSOD my Vista install when I try to install them.
