Hi,

I understand that Quake 2 and Quake 3 can be ported to Linux without using emulators like Wine or Winex.

What other games can be ported without such emulators? Is Half-Life and UT possible?

Also what about new age games like painkiller, splinter cell and farcry?

Thanks,
Floyd.

Users didn't port them, a game company like Epic or Loki Software re-wrote the code to run on linux.

So the answer is, any game for which someone has written a linux-specifc version. Plus a few old DOS games that run on the DosBox DOS emulator.

I vaguely recall reading here that there would be a linux version of UT2K4, no idea whether it's happened yet.

UT2k4 runs out of the box on linux. You just install it off the DVD/CDs like you would under windows. I made a thread about games on linux in the OS forum that got some good replies, if you want to search for it.

I think WineX is for DX games, so any OpenGL game with Linux support should be OK, such as Quake 3, UT2k4 etc.
UT may be possible, it has an OpenGL render and they did a Mac version.

Splinter Cell is based on UT2k4 engine, so may work, but not necessarily out of the box.
Half life *should* be possible to work, I would guess, as they have Linux servers for it, same as UT2k4.
There is a copy of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory for Linux as well (free game, so free download).

Every version of quake was written to run on Linux natively at id, there was no porting necessary.

It's on the same CD/DVD as the Windows version.
