Games Like Quake

I'm looking for Quake type games that still have an active userbase. The last bastion of survival, QuakeLive, is slowly losing players. Modern FPSs just don't have the speed or fun factor QuakeWorld or CPMA had. Any suggestions?

Have to wait for the next Unreal Tournament maybe? It could happen!

I played tons and tons and tons of Quake 2. That was my favorite arena style FPS. Then of course Counter Strike was the bomb for the longest time.

EDIT:

If you're into consoles, I found Halo quite fun. Not exactly as fast paced, but not too far from arena style.

Try:

Urban Terror (based off of the Q3 engine) - old game but still lots of players (mostly foreign) play it but at least it's still being played!

other FPS but not quake-like:

alliance of valiant arms
counter strike online
blacklight retribution

quake style games are a dying breed, unfortunately. i miss the days of QW.

1on1 fps games are definetely dying, now everything is team based.

i used to play unreal tournament 2004 a lot some years ago, it had a big enough local community to make it worth it, with clans and tournaments... but it kinda died with ut3

I'd say Tribes: Ascend, but I haven't played it in months so I have no idea how active the userbase is. But it definitely filled a gap when I walked away from QL.

I don't have much hope that Epic will ever make a UT successor worthy of the UT name. Epic f___ed the duck with UT3.

Sadly, the arena style online multiplayer FPS genre is dead, mostly because Epic and ID failed to produce legitimate, first rate sequels to UT99 and Quake Arena.

In the same boat with you OP. I am just dying to play a fun deathmatch game, TDM or CTF. Waiting desperately for a new one to come out but none seem worth.. Nexiuz seems cool, but its the first time im hearing about that game and I suspect others have never heard of it either.

I tried Quake Live the other day because of this thread. That isn't Quake.

That's Quake 3 Arena... ugh

Quake 1 was the best. Quake 3 was the worst, by a very large margin. Quake 2 was alright.

Now, is there still any sort of online Quake 1 playing community?

I don't know man, the days of high speed, high skill shooters seems to have tailed off in the last decade. Most of it now is shoot the fat ass and the competition is lacking because of it. People need a challenge. 100%

yeah, i miss 1on1 duel mode FPS.
all the new players that play modern fps dont know about the satisfaction of jumping at high speed (q3) / making a wall dodge jump (ut2k4) and making a headshot with the sniper without zooming and that it would let you defenseless if you miss.
they all go walking, crouching to fire, killing people with 2 shoots or a small burst fire.
oh... and with a minimap showing enemy positions on the corner.

an old school fps 1on1 game without weapon stay its PURE adrenaline... so fucking tense

i remember when i played ut2k4 fairly competitively... even though i did not see the enemy i could know where he was from listening what he was picking up, and i knew that he knew where i was from what i was picking up, and i knew that we both knew at what time exactly the big armor was going to respawn and we couldnt let the other one take it for free

You mean a first person shooter? Those aren't exactly hard to find these days...

same genre but different gameplay. 1v1 qw was awesome but a loaded dm server was fun also. There was a lot of good mods for the game. Threewave ctf with the hooks, rocket arena, clan arena, tf, that one with the wizards, monks, knights?

we still play quake 2 pretty heavy. LMCTF. off-hand hook CTF. we have tuesday night pubs(10-20 players), a 2v2 tourney that is about to start and the clan-based ladder, the beat down. We have drafts, etc.

http://www.lmctf.com/beatdown/index.html

also on FB, under LMCTF. very active group.

we play on the ACME servers(regular ctf with a huge community) and tastyspleen servers too.

we have all the files you need.

I think the problem is there was to many hackers for these type of games. Quake was the worst and I got tired of auto aim bots and wall hackers and all the other stupid hacks that killed it for me.

I still play Quake single player with the Dark Places mod. The graphics are amazing and the game is harder no that the Ogres have much better accuracy with there grenades.
