Games Keep Freezing

Allright, something is starting to piss me off. First it started with Quake 4, but now it's moved on the HL2, and a number of other games. I don't use an Anti-Virus (yet, still need to install it) and there is nothing in the system tray besides the Nv thing, USB thing, and the Volume thing.

Second, do you think that since my Subwoofer is so close to my computer (sort of) that that is causeing the freezing???

System specs in Sig, OC is Super Pi (32M in 29 minutes SSE3 patched), Prime (10 hours now stable), and Memtest (couple hours) stable.

WHAT THE HELL IS CAUSING THE FREEZING!!!

I tried the 82.12 drivers from Nvidia (first ones I used) then went back to the WHQL ones (81.98) hoping that that might stop the freezing.

So if you need more info I'd gladly provide, but I'm pretty sure this is a software problem and not a hardware problem (hence, hopefully I'm posting in the right place).

Please help me all knowing anandtechers. <-(weird name)

Thanks :p

despite your disclaimer of the OC being stable, we have to ask:
does it freeze when you DON'T OC? let's just get that out of the way first.

Well, I tried running it at stock settings and I think that that was the problem. OC was NOT stable. Now, I'll try it at 2500mhz just to see if it works then.

ah, the joys of overclocking. just when you think you've got it down...

Apparently Prime "Stable" for 10 hours ins't stable.
Also, apparently SuperPi "stable" isn't really STABLE.

So then, how can we trust 24 hours of Prime???

Those programs often don't test the same areas as games will use, so their value is limited. I used to overclock a lot and try to find the limit, but I figured out it was completely pointless, and it's better to just pick a number that's a good amount lower than the limit you find, where it's a very stable, trouble free, low heat overclock.

you test the OC with the program that gives you problems. and looks like in this case, you've got some 10 hour gaming sessions to look forward to ;)

Seasonic S12 600W isn't enough????
It's a qualitly PSU and I doubt that 600W isn't enough.

It's a great PSU (I have a Seasonic myself), but the S12 has two 12V rails, each with no more than 15A, correct?

Prime is just ONE of the tests . . . "games" are another [or loop 3DMark0X] ;)

might up your Vcore to stabalize the O/C ;)

18A on each rail.
How does a dual rail PSU work anyway. Both 6 pin PCIe connectors are on the same line if that helps.

Anyway, back to the topic of this thread since we have all gotten so off topic (talking about hardware in a software thread, how dare you ;))

Been running it at 250x10@1.375 and it seems to be stable. It's prime stable for 10 hours. The thing that I don't get, is that at 260x10, even after I raised the vcore to 1.4 it still kept freezing. Maby anything about 2600mhz requires a nice large voltage bump. Oh well, I'm happy playing my games at 2500mhz (and it's not like ~100mhz really made all that much of a difference in games anyway).

When you get above a certain point, the performance of the chip will actually decrease, even if it doesn't crash, which is another good reason why it's better to have a more conservative OC for normal uses.
