I have heard in the past that playing games is not advised in Win2K. Is this true or was that the thought when Win2K first came out? I would love to go to Win2K full time, but I do play games every now and then.

Personally, i dont have any problems running games under W2K. It depends a lil on which games you play, but games like Q3, Unreal, SOF, Half-Life, DF work w/o any probs under 2000.

I guess win2k itself doesn't have problems with running games... it's just a question whether the games will run properly (or if they were designed to run) in win2k. With that you can go to NT Compatible and check if your favorite games will run in win2k...

Every game I have tried has worked with Win2k. The big thing you need to do with Win2k is DL the latest Windows Updates, DirectX, and drivers. If you combine all these your gaming experience will be best in Win2k.

I think its important to note that my PC is 23% faster running win2k than Win98SE.

How is your HD formatted (FAT32?) and did you use the default ACPI support in having success with games? I am very much interested in these 2 issues at the moment. Now if I can only get my NEW system back up and running.

UT and Win2k dont mix all that well. I know there are a lot of people that say it works fine, but the reality is that there are 100s of posts on the UT forums complaining about poor performance.
Personally i find it only runs well in OGL

I haven't had a game not work yet, but I do b!tch about the performance loss quite a bit. Most games are hardly noticeable, while others take a huge hit. One thing I am going to start doing though, is creating a power user account just for games. If you logon as a power user instead of administrator some games (like soldier of fortune) run a lot better.

Funny how i can run nfs 2se, 3, 4, 5, madden 2k1, nhl2k demo, q3, q1, q2, ut, unreal, sacrifice, combat sim., a-10........... shall i go on?
You should follow that NT compatible link.

Performace depends on your video card vendor NOT WIN2K. IF your video card vendor is incompetent to make decent drivers don`t blame it on the os.

It really depends on your video card.... NVidia has the best Win2K drivers available.... and I heard 3Dfx has new beta drivers that do excellent in Win2K.... if you have a game that says it cant be installed in a NT enviroment you can use a file called apcompat.exe that is on the Win2K CD.... it tricks the programs into think it is any 9X version or NT version.

Lsd, Just to let you know I have the newest Voodoo 5500 Drivers out and Ive tried Dx5...6...7...and 8.
Before I installed the full version of W2K I had the upgrade overinstalled 98se, it ran all the EA games great.

IF your video card vendor is incompetent to make decent drivers don`t blame it on the os.

Umm you are wrong, its totally the OS, I love W2k And will not go back to anything else.

the preformnce of gaming under win2k (compared to win98) is determined a great deal by the quality of the drivers of the video card you are using. An example of this is shown in a number of Anandtech video card reviews where the same hardware is used to bench mark the same games but only changing the OS.

Nvida based cards showed very similar results in both win98 and win2k
however the ati Readon cards preformanced halved under win2k, (3dfx cards seemed similar to win98 results but i can't quite remember offhand).

Now if it was an OS problem then the results would be reduction in preformance would be across the board, rather than specificaly to one video card. You will see that the next set of drivers released for win2k will bring the readon cards into line with win98 preformance. :)

I had trouble running NFS 5 (PU) (it installed fine win win2k), untill i changed from the drivers supplied with win2k for my diamond viper V550 (TNT) to the nvidia reference drivers.

If you would like post, a list of your hardware and what errors you are obtaining and what you have tried to fix them, and we may be able to help you solve the difficulties you are facing with gaming under win2k. :)

Eat your words...
I have a gf2 and there is almost NO performace difference between win2k and win98, sometimes win2k produces higher fps than win98.
Also someone, i think robotech, said that with 1.04.00 drivers for the v5 make win2k performance up to par with win9x

I play Tribes all the time in Win2k, using 6.47 Nvidia drivers on my Creative GTS...and it smokes. As in FAST...what problem are you having?
BTW, if you have an Nvidia vid card, there is NO reason to stay with Win9x based OS...I play Q3A, UT with the Loki OpenGL patch, Motocrossmadness2, Tribes, Counterstrike, Thief, and even Worms Armageddon (in Whistler, I am a beta tester).
Whistler is gonna kick some butt IMO..Thief and WA both refused to install under Win2k, but both install and play GREAT under Whistler Beta1....yeehaw, life is good!

EA's 2000 lineup doesn't work in win2k and hasn't been patched for it. The 2001 and so on are perfectly compatible. Pissed me off when I lost NBA Live 2000, but win2k is worth it, it's stable as a beotch
