games in dx9 mode really look that much better than dx8 mode?

The reflections from the brick wall and the rock look better and more vibrant in DX9 in the first set.

In the second set, the PS2.0 shots on the 5900U looks blurry as hell compared to the Radeon

You've got to be kidding. Do you really think the best use of technology is to look at a dark scene with very few effects? How about finding something a little more dynamic than staring at a wall?

Gee, Wolf3D didn't require DX9 and it could display a completely black screen as well as anything today can. I guess all new 3D technology is worthless.

He asked for better shots, then you complain that he had bad ones? I just don't get it. Did you not read the last line of his post?

To me there is very little difference between dx8 and dx9. Sure there are minor effects on some surfaces that look cooler on dx9. BUT dx9 won' t make a bad game fun and dx8 won't make a great game boring. To me it is all graphical fluff. Of course when I buy my next video card I'll make sure it is fully dx9 compatable, but honestly it won't change the games if it wasn't.

Not having a copy of HL2 in my hands, I'd say I'm at a bit of a loss to provide him with more screenshots, wouldn't you say?

And if minor graphical improvements aren't important to you, why are you bothering with these threads? Go back to the original GeForce. That should run all current games just fine as long you turn down the options on all that graphical fluff.

Have you seen the full 600 MB HL2 video? If not, I'd recommend downloading it. There is a portion of the video that's got a demonstration of several graphical techniques including stained glass. Whether or not they require DX9 or not I couldn't tell you. But I do know I've never seen anything that could even compare to it, and I would assume that if DX8 could do it we'd have seen it already.

Then don't bash him for not having them either.

So is that how to win arguments? If anyone doesn't agree then they don't belong in the discussion? I stated my opinion that dx9 does not "Really look that much better". Yes it looks better. But not enough to make a real difference in game play. I'd much rather play a great dx8 game than a crappy dx9 game that looks better. Just having that fluff isn't enough. What I want is a great game, and if it does dx9 well then it is a nice SMALL bonus.

Yeah, I've seen all the HL videos, including the physics\graphic demo one.

I think DX9 offers a much better overall image. Just try this: Start off w/ only DX 8.1. Watch the video. Now install the newest version of DX9 and watch the video. Big difference. Oh, but I think you probably need a DX9 card to see the difference in the video.

Good one?

So if nobody has a copy of a game which takes advantage and can show the benefits of DX9, why are there all these comparisons that use this single boring screenshot to defame DX9? I've seen this argument using this screenshot several times. All I can figure is that it's the last chance of redemption for Nvidia fanboys to hang onto, that DX9 doesn't matter.

I'm saying you don't need to be part of the discussion because the crux of the discussion IS minor graphical enhancements. The last major improvement in consumer 3D was specialized geometry hardware and before that texturing hardware. Other than that, every other enhancement has been relatively minor graphical fluff. If you'd rather play a good game than a pretty game, they you don't need DX at all, much less DX8 or 9. Civ II runs on a 1MB video card.

From what I can see in the hdr demo, hdr is a major leap forward and hl2 has it (it's not in the demo or screen shots). D3 looks great because of the lighting. Iduhno seems like a big deal to me. Unless you have a older card. Then you should upgrade or stop b-tching, But hey what do gabe and carmack know they suck right?

The video is a pre rendered movie. Your video card is not rendering the image. It will look the same on any video card.

Don't know what hdr demo you have but it wouldn't even run on my gf4 card this is my version.

I don't think screenshots quite give the full effect, no matter how good they are. For instance in the HL2 Source video, in the first room there is dusty light filtering through the cracks that looks very convincing. I've never seen anything like that at that level of detail in DX8 games.

I think that DX9 looks noticably better, but not enough to make me buy a new video card just for that.

Hey if you want to be really cheap I am sure a version will come out for x-box with fx 5600 style graphics. Drop in the disc and play.

Nebor, with you I never can tell. Your posts are so over the top, it's hard to tell when you are serious. :p

Uhm, what I meant is that most people (perhaps not on this site) would not be willing to pay $150+ just for DX9 effects if their DX8.1 card can play the game just fine.

Maybe I am a little off (I know my english is) but the radeon 9600 pro oem (oc's like crazy) is about $155 minus the sale of your old card. If that's not cheap for a diffrence you can "see" then you must be unemployed and should not be buying hl2.
