Games for Windows Live question

I don't remember signing up for GEFL but I probably have.

I started F1 2010 finally, and it wants me to log in to GFWL. It pops up with a username I don't remember seeing, an odd word and number.

But my e-mail and password log in.

My question is, does it matter about this weird username? Do I have to record it for other GFWL games? Can I change it? I'm asking before linking this game key to that account.

Do you want to go online? Logging into GFWL online is not required for "most" GFWL games. There is an option to create an offline account which is only on your machine. I own 3 GFWL games and I didn't create or link to an online account for any of them.

The "username" you saw is probably your Gamertag, or that of someone else who might've logged into Games for Windows Live (or some other Microsoft service) previously on your computer. Note that your Games for Windows Live account is actually global across a wide range of Microsoft's services. The account you logged into and apparently already had, could've been created for Xbox Live, MSN, Hotmail, Windows Live, MSDN, TechNet, etc...

You can't normally change your Gamertag, at least not for free, but the name you saw might have been some sort of placeholder. You can try logging into account through the WWW (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Live/PC) and seeing what it says. Your GFWL Gamertag is also your Xbox Live Gamertag, even if, like me, you've neved owned or used an Xbox, so don't worry too much if the site seems more geared towards the console.

No one else ever uses my computer. I think it was somehow a GFWL-generated name.

I'm not sure how that offline account relates to this GFWL generated account name.

It probably doesn't. I asked if you actually wanted to log into GFWL online because if you didn't need or want to you could just not worry about it and just use an offline account. Based on what you said in your first post, I got the feeling that you were just trying to play the game and it was demanding that you log in. Good luck. :)

On the one hand my main interest was being able to save games. But on the other in case I do want to do something online, I don't like some weird username I have to keep track of.

So I was trying to see what I need to do before I register this key with GFWL, in case I should make a new account or something. Thanks.

You don't need to keep track of your Gamertag, you log in with your e-mail address. Your Gamertag is just the name other people see instead of your e-mail address.

In that case, it's just preferring a name I pick to a generated one.
