Microsoft 'killed' plans to introduce widespread PC and Xbox 360 cross-platform play.

That's according to Voodoo PC founder, Rahul Sood, who claims that Microsoft explored cross-platform online gaming but tests didn't go too well.

Sood claims that the cross-platform concept was discussed "many many months ago", however when it came to testing, the results suggested this was an avenue better left unexplored.

Speaking via an interview, the Voodoo man explained that since the controller couldn't compete with the accuracy of the mouse and keyboard, "console players got destroyed every time".

The playing field was so unfair that "it would be embarrassing to the Xbox team in general had Microsoft launched this initiative," he said.

Microsoft of course trialed the idea of PC versus Xbox 360 gaming with FPS Shadowrun, which received mediocre reviews.

Microsoft is currently scheduled to release Fable 3 on the PC and 360 around the same time.

Well, duh. This is has been an accepted fact for as long as there's been FPS titles for both platforms.

I find it really sad they didn't just enable keyboard/mouse for the console.

Some players probably don't give a damn about kill ratios, they just want to run around shooting things.
For those that care, hooking up a kbm wouldn't be inconvenient in the slightest.

Yep, and you may find some PC gamers using a 360 controller if they weren't competing against 100% kb/mouse.

I thought that for a while too, but I think the reason they didn't enable a keyboard/mouse is that w/ a pc you're generally sitting at a desk, great place to keep them, where as w/ a console you could be on the couch or sitting on the floor, not good places for them.

I believe one of the Quake games could be played between Dreamcast and PC players. Apparently the ass raping was tremendous.

Yeah, Quake III Arena.

I really don't understand why they don't make some xbox Keyboard/Mouse thing. It's another peripheral they could sell for $$ and would put that argument to rest so they could turn it into as competitive a platform as the PC. Although if you played high level you would HAVE to play with it, or ban it. So that might taint it's appeal.

maybe they could do shit like RTS' or RPG's at least?

RTS and MMO on a console? Those are just as bad as FPSes.

I'd say those three genres are basically the three biggest reasons PC gaming is still popular at all (if we want to get into the whole "PC gaming is dying" thing).

A cross-plaform Diablo 2 type should be possible without too much difficulty when it comes to controls. Even Dragon Age: Origins proved that something along the same lines of Baldurs Gate 2 could be done on a console and be a popular game.

An RTS would be difficult to keep the playing fields level without hindering the PC gamers play and experience.

I'd love to have cross-platform games just so I could show how much better the PC is over the console for games when set up properly 🙂

Because it's awkard for most console users to use, 90% of console users would never buy it even if it was perfect for them, and it would drive a wedge into the player bases of games that supported it.

This is the typical excuse of the Console Fanboi. (Not insulting you by calling you one, but just saying...) I use one of my PCs in lounge mode, keyboard on lap and trackball on cushion beside me. My primary PC still sits at a desk and it also uses a trackball. (I just prefer trackballs, since it eliminates all wrist overuse soreness or pains, at least for me.) Lounge mode works just fine. Limited minds never find solutions. I have been using a PC+TV on and off for decades (back when typical CRT monitors were up to 15" and CRT TVs were up to 25", way before LCD monitors), long before the "1st gen" Consoles, longer before the "next gen" Consoles, and even longer before these currently available next-next-gen Consoles. Sometimes an addition video card was required, but hey, you rarely get more than you paid for (not counting those of us who are pathological Hot Deal(tm) seekers).
